College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 9, Randolph-Macon 7

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Zach Berkowitz (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) scored a career- and game-high four goals in the Quakers’ 9-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse victory over visiting Randolph-Macon College Saturday. Senior Adam Fiore (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) added a game-best five points on two goals and three helpers in the Quakers’ third win in four games.

Berkowitz scored twice and had an assist in a decisive 5-0 Quakers’ run in the final 6:25 of the second quarter. Miles Muncie’s second of three goals gave the Yellow Jackets (3-10, 2-3 ODAC) a 4-2 lead 8:56 before halftime. Alex Brownlee triggered the five-goal spurt off with an unassisted tally 6:25 before the half. Berkowitz scored back-to-back goals less than a minute apart, which tied the game and put the Quakers ahead for the first time. He set up a Fiore score 4:15 before the break for a 6-4 Guilford lead. Fiore closed the spurt with an unassisted wrap-around goal 1:20 before halftime that made it 7-4 Quakers.

Randolph-Macon’s Ryan Davidson scored the third quarter’s lone score with 46 seconds left in the period, which brought the Yellow Jackets to within 7-5.

After Guilford’s Dylan Haupt scored to start the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets answered with goals by Muncie and Ryan Davidson to draw within 8-7. Davidson’s goal came with the man advantage and drew the Yellow Jackets to within a goal for the first time since the second quarter.

The teams traded possessions for the next six-plus minutes with both goalies making clutch saves to keep the score 8-7. Guilford’s Berkowitz scored a key insurance goal off an unassisted blast from the left side, which provided the game’s final margin. Both team’s turned the ball over the final minutes and neither squad fired a shot prior to the final horn.

Berkowitz added an assist and shared game-high scoring honors with Fiore at five points apiece. With two goals and three assists, Fiore became the fourth member of Guilford’s 200-career points club, it’s first since 1993. Alex Brownlee, Dylan Haupt and Daniel Haupt also scored for the Quakers, who held a 32-28 edge in shots. Connor Manning won six of 16 face-offs and picked up a team-high six ground balls. Goalie Parker Styles made seven saves and three ground balls in goal.

Muncie’s three goals paced Randolph-Macon’s offense. Davidson scored two goals and an assist and Coleman Adams had two assists. Nick Benhoff won 13-of-20 draws, picked up a game-high 10 ground balls and added an assist. Brian Davies when the distance in goal and made 11 saves.
