LYNCHBURG, Va. – Guilford College’s Josh Shepherd and Grayson Tuttle each tallied three RBI apiece as the Quakers claimed a Tuesday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest over Lynchburg College, 11-6.
The Quakers (17-20) broke the ice in the top of the third inning after placing runners on the corners with one out. Josh Shepherd connected on a three-run home run to left field to claim the lead. Guilford exploded with an eight-run fifth inning as the Quakers produced two extra-base hits to drive in multiple runs in the inning. Rocco Wilcox’s two-RBI single with two outs capped the rally as both extra-base hits and Wilcox’s single drove home seven of the inning’s eight runs. Lynchburg answered the rally with a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, sparked by Luke Rodgers’ triple with one out. Joe Tomasulo connected on a solo home run one inning later, but the Quakers snuffed out a potential rally by inducing a double play to end the inning. Guilford relief pitcher John Todd closed the door on Lynchburg in the bottom of the ninth inning, sitting down the Hornets by facing the minimum in the inning to seal the victory.
Wilcox finished three-for-four with two RBI while Andrew Brann was the remaining Quakers’ bat with three hits, batting three-for-five with one RBI. Joe Metts was the final Guilford bat with a multi-hit effort, batting two-for-five with two RBI and a double.
Darin Salter (2-2) claimed the win for the Quakers in a six and one-third inning effort, striking out one batter and walking one. John Todd claimed his second save of the season in a two and two-third inning effort, striking out two batters and giving up just one hit.
Ryan Irby (2-1) took the loss for Lynchburg, walking two in a four and one-third inning effort where he gave up six runs on six hits.
The Quakers close the 2016 season with a three-game series at Huntingdon College, beginning with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
