Elon Phoenix Set for CAA Women’s Tennis Championships

ELON, N.C. – The No. 2-seeded Elon University women’s tennis team starts the 2016 CAA Women’s Tennis Championships when they host the No. 7-seeded Drexel Dragons on Friday, April 2. Once the morning matches are complete, Elon’s match will begin after one hour of warmups.

RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY…
There is rain expected to hit in the area tomorrow in the early afternoon. If tomorrow’s match at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center experiences a threat of rain, Elon vs. Drexel will be moved indoors at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, N.C. The match would then start around 12:30 p.m. All quarterfinals matches will play singles first.

THE FIELD
The Phoenix earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament after a finishing with an overall record of 13-9. No. 37-ranked William & Mary earned the top spot while James Madison and College of Charleston are the No. 3 and 4 seeds, respectively. Rounding out the field is fifth-seeded UNCW, sixth-seeded Towson, seventh-seeded James Madison and eighth-seeded Delaware.

LAST TIME OUT
The Phoenix earned a 6-1 victory on the road at USC Upstate to end the regular season on April 14. Elon enters the CAA Championships on an eight-match winning streak.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the first-ever meeting between the Phoenix and the Dragons. Since joining the Colonial Athletic Association last season, Elon is 8-3 overall against conference opponents. There is not a conference season in the CAA.

POSTSEASON AWARDS
Three Elon players were awarded postseason honors and Elizabeth Anderson was named CAA Coach of the Year as announced by the CAA on April 20. Olivia Lucas and Erica Braschi were named first-team All-CAA in singles. Taylor Casey joined Braschi on the second team All-CAA in doubles and she rounded out the award winners earning a spot on the All-Academic team.

UP NEXT
If Elon defeats the Drexel Dragons in the quarterfinals, it will face off against the winner of the James Madison/Towson match in the semifinals at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

HEAD COACH ELIZABETH ANDERSON
Elizabeth Anderson is in her 12th season as head coach of the Phoenix. Anderson led Elon to four straight seasons of 15 or more wins and guided the program to its first NCAA Tournament in 2014.

2016 CAA TOURNAMENT
Elon was selected to host the 2016 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships, which will be held April 21-24 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and the Burlington Tennis Center. It marks the first-ever CAA Tournament hosted by the Phoenix and first conference tournament hosted by the program since the 2013 SoCon Tournament.
