Elon Set to Compete in CAA Men’s Golf Championships

SOUTHPORT, N.C. – The Elon University men’s golf team is set to participate in the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Golf Championships this weekend, April 22-24, at the Saint James Plantation Founders Club in Southport, N.C.

LAST TIME
Elon finished fifth at last season’s CAA Championships. Two Elon players collected top-15 individual finishes, as Jonathan DiIanni finished in a tie for ninth and Charlie May finished 12th. DiIanni carded the lowest round of the tournament for a Phoenix with a three-under par round of 69 in the second round. The junior closed with a 76 to finish at 222 for the tournament. May used four birdies to follow his second-round 72 with a final-round 73. His three-day total of 223 left him alone in 12th.

THE FIELD
The Phoenix enters the tournament as the fourth-highest ranked team in the nine-team field. The maroon and gold trails only James Madison, College of Charleston and UNCW for the best ranking among CAA teams. Also participating in the tournament are Delaware, Drexel, Hofstra, William & Mary and Towson.

LOOKING BACK
Elon has earned three top-five finishes in tournaments this season at the and has been in the top-10 in all nine tournaments dating back to the start of the fall season. Jonathan DiIanni and Troy Beaver have led the Phoenix in average this season, with DiIanni ranking sixth in the CAA at 72.42 and Beaver ranking 14th at 73.38. DiIanni’s average ranks second in the program’s Division I era for a single season

MACTAS EARNS CAA HONOR
Jared Mactas was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Men’s Golfer of the Week on Nov. 4. He finished in a five-way tie for fifth after a rain-shortened Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

CAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Elon will tee off at 10:48 a.m. in the first round. The first Phoenix player to tee off will be Philip Loeb.
