North Carolina Central, Wake Forest on the Docket for Elon Baseball This Week

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University baseball team will look to extend its four-game winning streak with a pair of games against in-state competition this week. The Phoenix will play host to the North Carolina Central Eagles at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, before visiting the Wake Forest Demon Deacons for a 6 p.m. contest on Wednesday, April 27.

The Series
Elon has met North Carolina Central just twice. The Phoenix took both meetings in 2009 by scores of 22-0 and 10-5.

The Phoenix and Demon Deacons will meet for the 95th time. Wake Forest holds a 57-36 edge in the series (with one unknown result). The Deacs edged out the maroon and gold 4-3 at Elon’s Latham Park earlier this season. The two first met in 1909 in a 7-1 Wake victory.

About North Carolina Central
The Eagles enter Tuesday’s game with a 21-22 overall record and a mark of 8-10 in MEAC action. Central is hitting at a .276 clip and has scored 244 runs in 43 games. The team has 74 doubles, 41 home runs and 45 stolen bases. On the mound, the Eagles sport a 5.71 ERA and have struck out 333 hitters in 364.1 innings.

About Wake Forest
Wake Forest is 26-17 overall and 10-11 in ACC play after a sweep of North Carolina over the weekend. The Deacs are hitting .278 with 270 runs, 85 doubles and 36 home runs in 43 games. Over 377.0 innings, the Wake Forest pitchers have struck out 298 and boast a 4.73 ERA.

Conference Streak
The Phoenix has won eight consecutive conference games after winning the final two games at Northeastern and then recording home sweeps of Towson and Hofstra. The last time that Elon won at least eight straight league games was in 2009 when the maroon and gold put together a 17-game conference winning streak.

Zammarelli, Ogren Earn Weekly CAA Honors
Nick Zammarelli and Ryne Ogren pick up weekly honors from the CAA on Monday, April 25. Zammarelli was named the league’s player of the week, while Ogren collected rookie of the week distinction.

Zammarelli hit .636 (14-for-22) with three doubles, a triple, two home runs, 12 runs scored and 13 RBI. He had multiple hits in four games, including going 5-for-6 with a grand slam in a victory over UNCG and 4-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBI in game one against Hofstra. Zammarelli was an incredible 11-for-13 (.846) with runners on base.

Ogren batted .381 (8-for-21) with two homers, a double, 10 runs scored and seven RBI in the Phoenix’s five games. He had multiple hits in four games and drove in at least two runs in three outings.

O’Regan Power Surge
Liam O’Regan hit his seventh home run of the year in Elon’s game at High Point. That blast tied him with James Venuto for the program’s Division I freshman record. Venuto hit seven homers in 2015. O’Regan then set a new mark the next night by homering in a win over UNCG. O’Regan currently has nine homers.

O’Regan hit a home run in five consecutive games from April 16-23.

The Phoenix will look to extend its CAA winning streak, which is currently at eight games, with a three-game series at James Madison this weekend. Friday’s first pitch is set for 6 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va.
