Elon Baseball : Hot Phoenix Heads to James Madison for CAA Series

ELON, N.C. – Winners of eight consecutive Colonial Athletic Association games, the Elon University baseball team will try and keep that winning streak alive with a three-game series at James Madison this weekend. The Phoenix and Dukes are scheduled to open the series on Friday, April 29, at 6 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va. Game two is slated for 4 p.m. on Saturday, while the set concludes with a 2 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.

The Series
Elon and James Madison have played five games prior to the 2016 season, including last year’s three-game sweep by the Phoenix at home at Latham Park. The teams first met for two games in 1977, with JMU earning a 9-4 win in game one and Elon taking a 6-5 decision in game two.

About James Madison
JMU enters the weekend with an overall record of 17-24 and a CAA ledger of 7-8. The Dukes won two of their three games at College of Charleston last weekend, but dropped a 10-inning game at home to Maryland on Tuesday. The JMU offense is hitting at a .282 clip and has scored 239 runs in 41 games. The Dukes have 87 doubles, 19 triples, 27 home runs and 61 stolen bases. On the mound, JMU’s staff has posted a 6.61 ERA and has struck out 276 hitters in 365.0 innings. Opponents are hitting .311 off of the Dukes’ staff.

Conference Streak
The Phoenix has won eight consecutive conference games after winning the final two games at Northeastern and then recording home sweeps of Towson and Hofstra. The last time that Elon won at least eight straight league games was in 2009 when the maroon and gold put together a 17-game conference winning streak.

Zammarelli, Ogren Earn Weekly CAA Honors
Nick Zammarelli and Ryne Ogren pick up weekly honors from the CAA on Monday, April 25. Zammarelli was named the league’s player of the week, while Ogren collected rookie of the week distinction.

Zammarelli hit .636 (14-for-22) with three doubles, a triple, two home runs, 12 runs scored and 13 RBI. He had multiple hits in four games, including going 5-for-6 with a grand slam in a victory over UNCG and 4-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBI in game one against Hofstra. Zammarelli was an incredible 11-for-13 (.846) with runners on base.

Ogren batted .381 (8-for-21) with two homers, a double, 10 runs scored and seven RBI in the Phoenix’s five games. He had multiple hits in four games and drove in at least two runs in three outings.

O’Regan Power Surge
Liam O’Regan hit his seventh home run of the year in Elon’s game at High Point. That blast tied him with James Venuto for the program’s Division I freshman record. Venuto hit seven homers in 2015. O’Regan then set a new mark the next night by homering in a win over UNCG. O’Regan currently has nine homers.

O’Regan hit a home run in five consecutive games from April 16-23.
