Spring Football Practice begins on the local High School level next week here in Guilford County

It is time to hit it, but you can’t really hit, but they will be going in full gear….Full gear, but no contact and the area football teams will be installing their offenses and setting up their defenses for next season…Practices can go for 2 1/2 hours a day and I wonder if you could get in an hour in the morning before school and then come back and put in the other hour and a-half in the afternoon..

I’m sure most teams will choose to go in the afternoons, but practice is on for next week and some of the teams to keep an eye on are Page, Dudley, Northwest Guilford, Northern Guilford and Southwest Guilford with the talent that is returning at the key positions and the skill positions….

Got to watch those new coaches at Grimsley(Coach Brown), Smith(Coach Wiggins), Southern Guilford(Coach Bates), Northern Guilford(Coach Westberg) and High Point Andrews(Coach Patterson)……

Lots of pre-7 on 7 work going on next week too and the 7 on 7’s will kick in on June 16….

Hendon Hooker, Will Jones, Thomas Hennigan, Tre Turner, Javon Leake, Jaren Rainey, Brelin Fasion-Walden, Gerald Simpson, Myles White, Brion Seagraves and many others on the “Players to Look Out For List”….

Some of those sub-plots you are going to want to follow are:
The return of Dudley running back Ezra Perkins after injury….The re-building of the Page offensive line and how well QB Will Jones and RB Javon Leake operate early behind the new Pirate O’line….Ford Moser back on the field at Northern Guilford and could he be the new QB for NG…He is one of the best athletes on the field for the Nighthawks and was top DB and a prime WR target before he got hurt last year vs. NEG…Does NEG continue to move forward under second-year head coach Jason Lippard…How far can the QB Gerald Simpson carry the NEG Rams, he is a good one…How big will Alan Tisdale and Tyler DeBerry be for Page on defense? With all of the talent Page has on offense, sometimes those defensive guys get overlooked, but you can look around Tisdale and DeBerry….Will anybody be able to slow down that wide-open Northwest Guilford offense?? With Hennigan and Turner out there on the boundaries, NWG may be set to re-write some of the Rusty Larue records from the past….Is the year that NWG gets Northern?
NWG had the Vikings last year, but let NG back in the game and you can’t do that at Johnny Roscoe Stadium and walk out with a win, not going to happen if you let them back in the game…Happened in the Dudley-NG game a few years back and the Panthers paid the price….Are teams like Ragsdale and Western Guilford ready to get back on track??? Eastern Guilford is always a sleeper and do not sleep on the Wildcats, they have mucho talent down there in Gibsonville and with a key name or two at WR and at LB, EG will be ready to be a factor…Southeast Guilford will a team to keep an eye on and once sophomore QB Ryan Douglas is done with his baseball, he will be full-time football and among our real young QB’s in the County, this is the kid to keep an eye out for…Ryan Douglas is already a proven winner with his work on the baseball field and that should transfer to his football work too….Almost forgot, HP Andrews has a new coach(John Patterson) too and is going to have a bunch of new team too….HP Central began last year with the athletic soph. QB and then went with the senior athlete and now the Soph should be back in the saddle this season….Lots of sub-plots, have a sub for lunch and we will look at more of these this afternoon….Added Brion Seagraves and Myles White from Dudley up there on the players to look out for list and those two along with the Speas kid on the offensive line are for sure, ones to look out for from Dudley…It looks like another big battle looming this coming Fall, with Dudley due to travel over to Page’s Marion Kirby Stadium in 2016….

  2. Hey Andy, how come there is never any build up or write up like this leading up to basketball practice. Seems like football gets way more ink and previews

  3. Hey if they have an off-season basketball practice starting up, you can bet we’ll be on it…We are ready.

  4. other sports doing well

I agree football is the #1 money maker but many school programs are also printing money in their basketball programs. Given if a problem no longer has top basketball players, then they may be down in their attendance (i.e. Page, Grimsley and even Dudley was down for while). Other programs such as Northern, NW, GDS, WES, HPC and SW have a lot of people showing up for game day. Some programs are also at least covering their bills with soccer, baseball and softball. Many of the middle schools don’t do too bad with sports such as track because middle school parents still come out to see their kids on game days.
