Boys Final from Greensboro Day School:
Greensboro Day School 51, Wesleyan Christian Academy 46
Huge game for Solomon Smith from Greensboro Day as he helped keep his team on top pretty much all night and Coach Freddy Johnson felt like Smith was a difference-maker in the win…Two big eruptive jams by J.P. Moorman in the 4th quarter of the game and that is when J.P. really began to come on offensively…Late three by John Newman III to lift the Bengals up when they could have been going down and along with Will Dillard and Jordan Perkins, the Bengals got 43 of their 51 points from their starting five tonight…Nice work off of the Bengal bench from Michael Fowler and Pearce Landry and those two young men gave the Bengals some big minutes in the ball game and Fowler was especially big and instrumental in the victory because he gave the Bengals an extra big body to battle the bigs from Wesleyan and Wesleyan was big with Jalen Hoard and big man Ian Steere getting some very big buckets up around the rim…The Trojans got similar help from David Carraher, plus Aaron Wiggins began to find his range outside and WES got a nice night from one of their smaller players, in point guard Sean Walker…Again the Bengal bench might have been one of the bigger differences in this game, as the look looks like 7 points off of the Bengal bench and none off of the Trojans’ bench….The game had a few key runs as the Bengals ran out to an early 9-0 lead to begin the ball game and then WES started the second half on a 5-0 run….WES missed some key free throws in the first half and at times the game got a little choppy and ragged, but it was intense and both teams were playing their tails off and they both were after the same thing and whatever it took to get and was to get a leg up on their chief-rival in the polls, in the Conference Standings and in the two-game season series….

Again, Solomon Smith was doing some key things tonight that really helped his team and like we were saying GDS ran out to that early 9-0 lead and then by the end of the first quarter it was 11-8, Greensboro Day…WES with an 8-2 run to close out the first quarter….

Greensboro Day would extend that three-point first quarter lead and in fact, they would triple that lead, with GDS taking a 25-16 lead over WES into the locker room at halftime….

WES had that patented 5-0 run to begin the second half and the Bengals withstood most of that run, but by the end of the third quarter, most of the Greensboro Day School lead was gone, as WES cut the lead to just one, with GDS on top 30-29 at the end of third frame…

And here comes the fourth quarter and WES tied the game up in the 4th period, but the Trojans could never grab the lead if our numbers are on the money and Greensboro Day was “Money in the Bank” down the stretch with J.P. Moorman taking his offensive game to the limit with those two ‘Crazy Good’ dunks/slams and then his key block after a dunk, as Moorman took over on the defensive end..I think one of Moorman’s dunks was a combo Tomahawk/Windmill Dunk, and since I just got through watching the 1976 ABA All-Star Game Slam Dunk Contest on YouTube back on Sunday night, with Dr. J, David Thompson, George Gervin, Larry Kenyon and Artis Gilmore, I feel like I have “Slam Dunk” on the brain this week…

Dr. J won by the way and David Thompson finished second and Greensboro Day was your Winner tonight after a ferocious fourth quarter from both teams inside the Dillard Athletic Center and now Greensboro Day gets ready to face High Point Christian Academy at the DAC, on Friday night…

GDS scoring and these are unofficial numbers for both teams, but here is what we have so far…
Solomon Smith, John Newman III and J.P. Moorman with 10 points each, Jordan Perkins had 7, Will Dillard 6, Michael Fowler 4 and Pearce Landry 3….
For WES we spot up with Jalen Hoard 12, Ian Steere 11, Aaron Wiggins and Sean Walker with 9 a-piece and David Carraher with 6….
Tonight/Tuesday night, the Greensboro Day School Bengals could never really put the Wesleyan Christian Academy Trojans away, but in the end, the Bengals walked away with a big 51-46 victory….WES was big, but GDS was just a little quicker and the Bengals got Big when they had to, tonight….

The young ladies totals from the GDS-WES game at the Dillard Athletic Center tonight….
End of 1st Q:WES 11, GDS 6…Halftime:WES 23, GDS 21…End of 3rd Q:WES 39, GDS 28…Final:WES 56, GDS 40…
WES scoring:Shaniya Jones 24, Bre Ware 14, Sarah Bailey 7, MacKay 5, while Williams and Darr had 3 each…
GDS scoring:Gloria Smith 10, Mahlon Brady 10, Maddie Murdock 9, Chole Brewington 5, Madison Head 3 and Whitney 3….
This was really the best game I had seen from the Greensboro Day School girls all year and they were in this game tight until the 4th quarter…GDS just did not have that finishing punch, but they went toe-to-toe with WES through three stanzas, but by the 4th round, Shaniya Jones, Bre Ware and the MacKay company for WES were pretty much ready to put this game away…GDS got down for the count and they couldn’t get back in it…Once WES got the lead in the 4th quarter and began to pull away, GDS did not have an answer….

Shaniya Jones will be on quite a few All-State teams when this season is complete and she showed us why late in the contest tonight…She and the Trojans can wear you down and then they come after you with that Knock-out Punch…

But like I was saying to me this is one of the better games that GDS has played this year and maybe even better than when I saw them play Providence Day back in November, I think it was….GDS lead WES even early in the third quarter and they were cutting Jones off at the top of the canvas/key and did not give her the room or space she wanted in order to get all the way to basket and early in the game, the Bengal were frustrating Jones and for your defense, that is always a good sign….

GDS had strong games going in the first half from Gloria Smith, as she hit two big threes that were in-your-face and Mahlon Brady was playing big with some key blocks and GDS was getting blocks on defense from Maddie Murdock too…GDS was playing well early even though they lost Chole Brewington to two quick fouls and she had to set down with the foul trouble just about a minute and a-half in the game…That can hurt you, but GDS survived it early, with Madison Head and Gloria Smith picking up the slack and when Brewington came back in the game/returned to the game, she was ready to hit at the foul line….We have her scoring line at five free throws in the game…

You had to like what you were seeing and the overall effort from GDS through three quarters tonight, but they ran out of gas in the fourth and that is when Shaniya Jones and her Trojan teammates, out their game in 5th gear/overdrive….Big Boost by Bailey off the bench, was Sarah Bailey did not play much early, but she really showed up and shined late in the game for WES….WES is quick and they can attack that basket hard with Jones, Ware, and MacKay making it click and there were some big picks/screens being set in this game too and the ladies were not afraid to go to floor if somebody tried to run through that screen/pick….

To put a spin-cap on the girls from GDS and it is a positive spin, the Bengal girls were playing with confidence vs. WES tonight….The coach from N.C. State Mark Gottfried said today, “You have to believe you can beat a team, before you can beat them” and the GDS girls were believing tonight, but they just came up a bit short and they got Jonesed…You heard that old song, “I got a Basketball Jones”, well WES has a basketball Jones…..

An exciting game for the girls at GDS tonight and I have to say, tonight was one of the first times that I have heard the GDS Bengals student cheering section really get behind their girls and they were doing it and did that tonight….Great atmosphere for basketball games tonight at the Dillard Athletic Center and the Bengal Student Section got behind and supported both of their teams tonight….

HPCA at GDS on Friday and those GDS Bengal girls are on the move, but I know it still want be easy when they and the GDS boys make that return trip over to High Point to face Wesleyan in another week or two…..

Adios on these games for tonight and let’s go looking for more scores and some game reports and we hope did justice on our reports coming in from GDS tonight….
