GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford College senior Zachary Houston (Hickory, N.C./St. Stephen’s) was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) NCAA Division III Academic All-District V Team, the organization announced Thursday. Houston, who was also so honored in 2016, advances to CoSIDA’s Division III Academic All-America ballot, the results of which will be announced February 28.
The all-district squads are comprised of men’s basketball students from Division III institutions in the 10-state area from Virginia to Missouri. Nominees were starters or key reserves of sophomore academic standing or above who maintained at least a 3.3 grade point average.
Houston, a 6-0, 175-pound point guard, has started all 22 of Guilford’s games this season. He scores just 3.0 points per game, but tops the Quakers and ranks among the top-four Old Dominion Athletic Conference per-game leaders in minutes (33.8, 3rd), rebounds (7.9, 4th), assists (4.0, 4th), and steals (1.6, 4th). His 2.8 assist-to-turnover ratio stands 28th among NCAA Division III leaders through games of February. The team captain has four games with 10 or more rebounds, including a career-high in a win against Greensboro College November 15. Houston recorded a season-high eight points, plus 12 rebounds and four assists, in a November 19 loss to nationally-ranked Emory. The senior has eight contests with five or more assists on the season.
A three-time Academic All-ODAC honoree and seven-time Guilford Student-Athlete Honor Roll member, Houston is a dean’s list health sciences and exercise and sport sciences double major with a 3.82 grade point average. He serves on Guilford’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is an active member of the Guilford Christian Ministry. Houston is also a certified nursing assistant and was named a 2015-16 Third Team All-ODAC selection.
Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers are 18-4 overall, 11-2 in the ODAC. Guilford enters Saturday’s home game with league-leading Randolph-Macon College (16-6, 12-1 ODAC) ranked 22nd in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and first in the Division III South Region Rankings. Tipoff in Ragan-Brown Field House is set for 4:30 p.m.
