HPU baseball falls to Kennesaw State in series finale, 5-4

• High Point dropped the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Kennesaw State by a score of 5-4.
• The Panthers led off four-straight innings with solo home runs, including two from junior Hunter Lee.
• Freshman Trevor Holloway pitched a career-high six innings and allowed just two earned runs in a no-decision.

KENNESAW, Ga. – The High Point University baseball team dropped the final game of its weekend series at Kennesaw State by a score of 5-4 on Saturday in Kennesaw Ga., but still claimed the series, two games to one on the weekend. Junior Hunter Lee hit two solo home runs for the Panthers in the loss.

“We were a totally different team this weekend,” head coach Craig Cozart said. “We were so engaged in the game and it was a blast to be in the dugout with these guys. I think this is a fresh start for us and I believe we will build on the momentum of this weekend. I am excited about what we do next week when we start conference play.”

Lee finished 2-4 at the plate in the contest with two home runs, two RBI and two runs scored. Three other HPU players recorded multiple hits as junior Austen Zente went 2-5 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored and juniors Jordan Sergent and Spencer Brown both finished 2-3.

Sophomore Cooper Jeffers took the loss after allowing one run on one hit in one-third of an inning. The left-hander drops to 0-2 on the season with the loss. Freshman Trevor Holloway got the start and threw a career-high six innings, allowing just two earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three.

Taylor Wikes earned the win for Kennesaw State with three innings of scoreless relief in which he allowed one hit and struck out one.

High Point drops to 8-6 with the loss to the Owls who improve to 7-8 on the season.

After Kennesaw State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Panthers got solo home runs to lead off the second, third, fourth and fifth innings to go ahead 4-1. Lee hit his first two home runs of the season with solo shots in the second and fourth while senior Josh Greene hit a solo home run to lead off the third and Zente did the same in the fifth.

The Panthers got a taste of their own medicine in the sixth when Taylor Allum led off the Owls half of the inning with a solo home run of his own, his seventh of the season. Kennesaw State then added three more runs in the seventh to go ahead, 5-4.

High Point returns to midweek action with a home game against Wake Forest on Tuesday, March 14, at Williard Stadium. First pitch in the game against the Demon Deacons is set for 4 p.m.

  1. Hitting .239 is abysmal. I believe the Florida recruiting hotbed has run dry. There’s more than enough talent in the Triad.
