College Men’s Tennis News – Guilford’s Martorell Named ODAC Player of the Week

FOREST, Va. –Guilford College junior Mesa Martorell (Wimberley, Texas/Wimberley) collected the first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week Award of his career Monday. Martorell joins freshman teammate Tate Godwin as Quakers’ winners of the honor this season.

Martorell, typically the second-singles player for Guilford, moved into the first slot against Randolph-Macon last weekend due to Godwin’s absence. Martorell’s 6-3, 6-4 win over Jacob Haines clinched Guilford’s 5-4 ODAC win over the Yellow Jackets. With Godwin out, Martorell teamed up with Jon Anthony-Thomas to claim an 8-6 first-doubles victory over Randolph-Macon’s Grant Sarver and Baxter Carter. Including fall contests, Martorell is 4-7 in singles matches, and 6-6 in doubles matches.

Coach Dave McCain’s Quakers (3-3, 1-1 ODAC) host Shenandoah University March 18 in their third straight home conference match.
