Coastal Carolina Tops Elon Men’s Tennis Phoenix 5-2 at Jimmy Powell Tennis Center

ELON, N.C. – Elon University men’s tennis had its brief two-match winning streak snapped Saturday morning, April 1, in a 5-2 loss to Coastal Carolina at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The loss sends Elon to 8-10 on the season while Coastal Carolina moves to 10-7. In falling to the Chanticleers, it marks the first loss to Coastal Carolina in program history.

The Rundown
Elon opened the day on the right foot with doubles victories at Nos. 2 and 3. Neal Port and Salvador Mijares made quick work of Sebastian Schneider and Zak Talic at No. 2, winning 6-1. Felipe Sarrasague and Taylor Foote then clinched the point with a 6-2 victory at No. 3.

But as the contest turned to singles, Coastal Carolina settled in and took five of the six matches to come away with the win. Felipe Osses-Konig earned Elon’s only singles win by defeating Francesco Migliano 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 to make it 2-1 in favor of the Phoenix with two doubles matches in the books.

Three of the singles matches went three sets, but the Phoenix dropped each of them. At No. 3, Petar Tomic battled back after dropping his first set to force a decisive third, but he ultimately fell 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. At No. 5, Jacob Bicknell took the first set from Talic before dropping the next two sets and the match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. At No. 6, Louis Rico cruised to a first-set win over Jose Ortega, but Ortega rebounded to win each of the next two sets to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Notes
– After missing 10 matches, Mario Paccini returned to action against the Chanticleers. He played No. 1 doubles with Tomic and the match went unfinished with the pair leading 5-4.
– With the loss at No. 3, the defeat marks Tomic’s first loss in a three-set match since Jan. 22 against NC State. He had won four three-set matches in a row before Saturday’s loss, including each of his last two matches overall against College of Charleston and Hawaii.
– Port and Mijares have now won each of their last nine doubles decisions together dating back to Feb. 18 against James Madison.
