WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University’s Luke Nussman hit a walk-off single in the tenth inning of game one of Saturday afternoon’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with Guilford College as the Quakers narrowly dropped two to Shenandoah. The Hornets claimed game one, 1-0, in ten innings and took the nightcap, 2-1. The Hornets are the top-ranked team in the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Top-25 Poll.
Eric Yost (2-5) took the complete-game loss in game one in spite of holding the Hornets to just four hits in nine and one-third innings of work. Yost faced the minimum in four of the first five innings as he held Shenandoah’s bats at bay. He limited the Hornets to just one hit through eight innings and fought off a rally in the bottom of the ninth inning where Dan Cameron hit a double down the left field line, sending the game to extra innings.
The Quakers placed runners in scoring position with two out in the top of the ninth inning after a Josh Shepherd double, but the Hornets retired the side. Trevor Denton posted a double to lead off the top of the tenth frame as the Hornets rallied again to retire the side.
Denton brought home a run on a double play in the first inning of game two to claim an early lead. Dan Cameron knocked a sacrifice fly with one out to tie the score before the Quakers forced a double play to end the inning.
Abel Arocho’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning broke the ice with one out as both teams engaged in a pitcher’s duel again in game two.
John Todd (4-3) struck out two and walked one in a six and one-third innings effort. Logan Jones relieved Todd in the seventh inning where the Hornets loaded the bases with two outs on a walk. Jones induced a fly out to Arocho for the final out of the seventh inning to retire the side. He finished the final one and two-thirds innings surrendering just one hit and one walk.
Gerard DePhillips struck out four and walked on in an eight and two-third innings effort in game one for Shenandoah while Tyler Hott (2-0) claimed the win throwing the final two-third innings. Colin Morse (5-0) took the game two win, striking out seven and walking two in eight innings. Hott collected his fifth save of the season, throwing the final inning.
The Quakers travel to Emory & Henry College for a 3 p.m. ODAC contest Wednesday afternoon.
