College Softball Finals – Guilford 3–9, #15 Randolph Macon 8–1 (Game 2 in Five Inn.)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Sabrina Moreno drove in four RBI over Saturday afternoon’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with Randolph-Macon College as the Quakers and Yellow Jackets split two games. The Yellow Jackets won game one, 8-3, while the Quakers took the nightcap, 9-1, in five innings. Randolph-Macon is ranked 15th in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III top-25 poll.

Moreno wasted no time to put the Quakers (22-8, 7-3 ODAC) on the board in the first inning of game one, blasting a two-run home run to left-center field after a sacrifice bunt to claim an early 2-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets (19-3, 4-2 ODAC) connected on four singles and took advantage of an error in the top of the second inning, producing a three-run rally sparked by a Sami Davidson single where she advanced to second on an error. A Harley Jones home run one inning later increased the lead by two, sparking a three-run rally.

Moreno rallied the Quakers in the bottom of the fifth frame with a two-out double in an inning where Guilford pounded three hits. The Yellow Jackets retired the Quakers in the inning and preserved the win.

Moreno’s hot bat continued into game two as she drove in a run on a single to left field in the bottom of the second inning after Katy Holt walked in a run one inning earlier. An errant throw home drew in one more run after Moreno’s RBI.

The Quakers blasted the Yellow Jackets in the fourth inning with a six-run rally. Shelby Helms drove home two runs with a single to left-center field. The Quakers added four more runs on a two-out rally sparked on an errant throw to first on Holt’s at-bat. Taylor Boyd’s two-run double to right-center field capped the rally.

A wild pitch drove home a run for Randolph-Macon in the final inning as the Quakers held off the Yellow Jackets in the fifth frame to end the contest early.

Moreno finished the afternoon four-for-five with a home run to start the day and a double in game one. Carver finished two-for-four with three walks.

Skylar Toth tallied two hits for the Yellow Jackets over the afternoon while Davidson tallied four RBI in the first contest.

Lackey (10-4) struck out three and walked two in a complete-game loss in game one for the Quakers. Carver (6-2) claimed the complete-game win in game two, fanning one and walking two while giving up just four hits.

Candace Whittemore (12-0) struck out six and walked four in the game-one complete-game win. Maddie Holcomb (1-1) took the loss in game three and two-third innings effort where she struck out two and walked six.

The Quakers return tomorrow to host Virginia Wesleyan College in an ODAC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Virginia Wesleyan is ranked third in the NFCA Division III Top-25 Poll.
