A&T Baseball: Williamson Earns Team’s First Weekly Honor

GREENSBORO (April 3, 2017) – North Carolina A&T baseball swept Savannah State over the weekend at War Memorial Stadium to get above .500 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference at 5-4. Freshman Camden Williamson (5-8, 180, Greensboro, N.C.) played a major role in that and was rewarded by being named the conference’s rookie of the year. The Aggies were 3-1 for the week after opening the week with a loss to Duke on Wednesday.

Williamson played his high school baseball at Dudley which is in proximity of N.C. A&T. He was 6-for-15 (.400) for the week and raised his batting average 38 points to .262 during the week. Williamson, who was hitting in the No. 2 spot in the weekend series versus SSU, got the Aggies off to two fast starts. In his first at-bat in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, Williamson homered to right field for his first career home run. In the first inning of Sunday’s game with one out, Williamson hit a line-drive single through the left side. He again scored the game’s first run when redshirt sophomore A.J. Hunt doubled him home.

The week started at Duke for Williamson who went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Williamson’s best game of the week came in Game 1 against SSU when he went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBI, a home run and he reached base on a walk once. He also had two hits in Sunday’s win.

It will be a busy week for Williamson and his Aggie teammates. The Aggies host High Point University 6 p.m., Tuesday at War Memorial Stadium before welcoming in UNC Greensboro, Wednesday at 6 p.m., at WMS. The Aggies three-game weekend series is at Florida A&M. The two teams will play a 1 p.m., Saturday doubleheader and then conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
