Associated Press Coach of the Year
Girls Voting for Coach of the Year in North Carolina and Northern Guilford head coach Kim Furlough, a Southeast Guilford graduate, was a runaway winner…..
Kim Furlough, Northern Guilford (11)
Angela Mayfield, Mount Airy (2)
Shane Slate, North Surry (1)

NG Nighthawks went (31-1) this past season and claimed the 3-A Girls State Title in a game heard on GreensboroSports Radio….

Respect the Process and Repeat the Process…..
Notes and Quotes from Coach Furlough at the Charlotte Observer:
Losing in last year’s final “kind of set the stage for us,” Furlough said, adding that South Carolina coach Dawn Staley – the coach of the eventual NCAA champion – spoke to her upperclassmen in the fall and the message was to “respect the process.”

“We knew we wanted to get back there,” Furlough said. “We felt like we had the talent to get back there, so this year it was all about our mission. … Every game matters. If you don’t respect all those games in between, you’re not going to get where you want to be. We just kept saying that all year.”

*****Very good observation by Mr. Springer in the Comments Section, on Guy Shavers from Southwest Guilford…He should have got/received the Coach of the Year for the boys…*****

+++++Congrats to Coach Furlough, Coach Darlene Joyner(NWG), Coach Shavers, and to Coach Joe Spinks(Eastern Guilford) on their outstanding high school basketball seasons…..+++++

  1. Could have been Kim Furlough OR Darlene Joyner. Two of the best in the state, and both right here in Guilford County. Still don’t think people realize just how good the quality of coaching in Guilford County is in basketball and football. There’s a reason we have a disproportionate number of state champs based on population when compared to the Triangle or Charlote/Meck.

  2. And Southwest’s Guy Shavers should’ve been boys coach of the year. Finished second to the Jax Northside coach by one vote.

  4. Congrats to Coach Furlough, and to her team, for such an outstanding season.

Having said that, it’s hard to believe that NW’s Coach Joyner did not receive a single vote? She took a team that lost 5 seniors to graduation (all of whom played significant roles), and led them to a 30-2 record and the 4A state championship. NW’s only losses were in their 2nd game to NG (and that loss was repaid in style in the HAECO championship game for NG’s only L), and a 5 point loss to St Francis Academy from Baltimore, who finished 30-1, with their only loss a couple of weeks ago in the Dick’s National Tournament in NYC.

Hard to understand how not even one voter thought that was deserving of Coach of the Year.
