College Baseball Final – Guilford 5–15, Eastern Mennonite 9–4

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Trevor Denton and Mitchell Stumpo each posted five RBI a piece over Guilford College’s Saturday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader split with Eastern Mennonite University. The Royals claimed game one, 9-5, but the Quakers roared back to win the nightcap, 15-4.

The Quakers (16-15, 3-9 ODAC) posted a four-run rally over the fourth and fifth innings of game two as Joe Metts posted a RBI-single to right-center field to bolster the three-run rally in the inning. Mitchell Stumpo posted the run in the next inning as he connected on a RBI-triple to right-center field after a Rocco Wilcox single one at-bat earlier.

The Royals (12-15, 3-9 ODAC) countered with a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning as Damon Frazier connected on a RBI-single in the middle of the rally.

Denton capped his day in response to the rally with a two-out, two-run double to left field one half-inning later as the Quakers begin to pull away. Guilford put the game out of reach with a seven-run rally in the top of the eighth frame as four runs came before the second out. Josh Shepherd sparked the rally with a one-out RBI walk. Stumpo and Metts each collected two-RBI hits in the inning as Stumpo’s single down the left-field line came right before Guilford’s second out. Metts capped the rally with a two-RBI infield single to third base.

Stumpo added to his RBI total with a one-out single to left-center field as the Quakers later loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth inning. Austin Wilson collected his second RBI of game two with a single through the left side as Guilford cruised their way to victory.

Denton posted a RBI-single with two outs in the top of the third inning of game one as the Quakers posted three singles in the frame, two with two outs, as Guilford claimed an early lead. Josh Shepherd continued the two-out rally one inning later with a RBI-single up the middle.

The Royals countered with large rallies in the third and fourth innings as three of four Eastern Mennonite runs were scored with no outs while the fourth came on a Frazier fielder’s choice that produced the first out. A pair of triples, led by Griffin Stanley’s two-run triple, produced all three runs for the Royals with two outs in the next inning as Eastern Mennonite enlarged the lead.

The Quakers mounted a rally in the seventh and eighth innings as Logan Washle produced a RBI-single in the seventh with one out after a Denton single advanced him to second base on an error. Mitchell Stumpo connected on a single to right field and Denton collected his second RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly as the Quakers closed in on the Royals.

Stanley collected his second RBI as he sparked a two-run, two-out rally with a infield RBI-single for the Royals in the eighth inning as Eastern Mennonite put the game out of reach.

Washle led the Quakers with eight hits over the doubleheader, including a five-for-six game two. Stumpo finished seven-for-11 on his five RBI day with two triples while Denton posted a four-for-ten effort on his five RBI day with a double. Metts finished six-for-11 with three RBI with a game-one triple.

Eastern Mennonite’s Joe Hall posted six hits and four RBI over the doubleheader to lead Eastern Mennonite. Frazier finished with five hits and two RBI.

Eric Yost (2-6) took the game one loss for the Quakers in a three and two-third innings effort where he fanned one and walked two. Stumpo (2-0) took the game two win in a three and one-third inning relief effort where he struck out four and gave up just two hits and a walk. John Todd threw a five and a one-third innings start, fanning six and walking one.

Frazier (4-3) took the game one win for the Royals, fanning four and walking two in seven innings. Jake Brown (1-2) took the game two loss, striking out two in six and one-third innings.

The Quakers conclude their stretch of road games Wednesday to face Roanoke College at Salem Stadium, home of the class-A advanced Salem Red Sox, for a 7 p.m. ODAC contest.
