College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 7, Bridgewater 6

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Zack Capwell (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) scored the winning goal with 2:12 left in regulation of the Quakers’ 7-6 come-from-behind lacrosse victory over Bridgewater College Saturday. Guilford goalie Parker Styles stopped a Chris Voorhees shot from 12 yards away in the final minute to preserve the Quakers’ (6-6, 1-4 ODAC) first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory of the season.

Capwell’s game-winner capped a 6-1 Guilford run and came soon after a Quakers’ timeout. After the timeout, he took a pass from about 25 yards, headed towards the goal, made a quick move to evade his defender and released a hard, left-handed shot from five yards out that beat Bridgewater’s goalie.

The Eagles’ Nick Strider won the ensuing face-off and Bridgewater (5-7, 1-4 ODAC) controlled possession for a minute before calling a timeout. Voorhees sent one shot wide with 38 seconds left, but got open for another 10 seconds later, which Styles captured in his crosse and quickly fired ahead to start a successful clear.

The Quakers overcame first-half deficits of 4-0 and 5-1 thanks in large part to a stellar defensive performance, most notably in the second half. Guilford allowed just one third-quarter shot, which enabled the offense to tie the game at 6-6 with three goals in the frame. The defense also forced Bridgewater into nine of their 16 turnovers in the second half. Guilford junior Will Forrestal forced five miscues alone, and picked up three ground balls.

In a contest marked by patient possessions, the Quakers slowly got themselves back into the game with solid special-teams play and fine shot selection. Capwell and Joe Eggleston both scored twice for Guilford, which had five different goal scorers. Styles finished with six saves, plus three ground balls and a caused turnover. Guilford killed off four of Bridgewater’s five man-up chances, including both second-half tries, and converted on two-of-three extra-man opportunities.

Blake Mann and Steven Cosgrove both scored two first-quarter goals, which staked Bridgewater to its 4-0 lead. Voorhees added two assists. Strider won eight of his 10 face-offs and the Eagles controlled 12 of the game’s 16 draws. Bridgewater netminder Kevin Metzger made 12 saves in goal and picked up a game-high five ground balls.
Coach Tom Carmean’s Quakers visit league-rival Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday (4/12) at 7:00 p.m.
