Track and Field: HPU’s Schnuck Breaks Hammer School Record at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va.—Senior Jamie Schnuck broke the school hammer throw as the High Point University women’s track and field team finished action at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational Saturday (April 8) in Lynchburg, Va.

Schnuck placed third in the hammer with a throw of 55.53m (182-2), a new High Point record. Schnuck previously broke the school mark at the 2016 Big South Outdoor Championships (54.86m – 180-0).

On Friday, junior Makenzi Holmes-DiGiovine won the discus with a throw of 48.42m (158-10). Freshman Allison Torrance was sixth with a heave of 38.54m (126-5). Holmes-DiGiovine was also sixth in the shot put with a throw of 11.75m (38-6.75).

In other action on Saturday, senior Madison Depner was fourth in the pole vault after clearing a height of 3.35m (10-11.75). Freshman Rachel Berndsen was fifth on attempts after clearing the same heights.

Junior CeAnna Soper finished fourth in the heptathlon with a score of 4,269 points. Freshman Anika Weisbrod placed 11th with 3,725 points, while senior Erika Bridges was 12th with 3,639 points.

Sophomore Charlotte Morrow placed fourth in the high jump after clearing a height of 1.55m (5-1).

“I was very pleased our multis,” HPU head coach Mike Esposito said. “CeAnna set a big PR in her second full heptathlon where she bounced back from a disappointing javelin to compete well in the 800. Anika had a great second day and is figuring some things out.

“Jamie was stout in the hammer and her hard work in the weight room and in the circle is paying off. Makenzi is getting on track at the right time in the discus.”

Next up, the Panthers will compete at the Phoenix Invite April 15 in Elon, N.C.
