HPU Breaks Two School Records at Big South Champs

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — The High Point University women’s track and field team broke two school records and picked up an individual title Thursday (May 11) at the Big South Outdoor Championships in North Charleston, S.C.

After two days, High Point sits in second with 68 points. Liberty leads with 120, while Campbell is third with 46 points, followed by Gardner-Webb (40), Charleston Southern (31) and Radford (20).

Senior Natalia Ocasio defended her title in the 3,000m steeplechase, winning in a season-best time of 10:52.67. Freshman Zoe Geis earned all-conference honors by finishing third in a season-best time of 11:07.08.

In the hammer throw, sophomore Jamie Schnuck broke the school record and placed second with a mark of 59.43m (195-0). Schnuck had four throws over her previous PR of 58.47m (191-10).

Freshman Kanajzae Brown is seeded first in the final of the 100 meters on Friday after clocking a time of 11.86, a High Point record time.

A pair of freshmen, Rachel Berndsen and Heather Keck, tied for fifth in the pole vault after clearing a height of 3.35m (10-11.75). Senior Madison Depner cleared the same height, but placed eighth on the number of attempts.

In the heptathlon, junior CeAnna Soper placed sixth with a total score of 4,520 points, while senior Erika Bridges was seventh with 4,387 points.

Sophomore Charlotte Morrow was sixth, while Bridges was seventh in the high jump after both cleared the bar at 1.58m (5-2.25).

In the prelims of the 800 meters, senior Cozette Collin and sophomore Keaton Case were first and second overall in 2:12.93 and 2:13.61, respectively.

The meet concludes Friday with field events starting at 11 a.m. and track events starting at 12:40 p.m.


Mann Breaks HPU Shot Put Record at Big South Outdoors

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — The High Point University men’s track and field team finished the second day of action at the Big South Outdoor Championships Thursday (May 11).

After two days, High Point sits in fourth place with 29 points, behind Liberty (56), Winthrop (46) and Gardner-Webb (39).

Freshman Pablo Romero Gonzales placed second in the decathlon with 6,756 points to earn all-conference honors. Sophomore Brad Kanney placed sixth with 4,288 points in his first decathlon. Gonzales also qualified for the finals of the individual 110m hurdles in 15.44.

In the 3,000m steeplechase, senior Paddy Grandinali earned All-Big South honors with a third-place finish in 9:33.82. Freshman TJ Morales placed sixth in 9:50.17.

Sophomore Britton Mann broke the school record in the shot put, placing fifth with a throw of 14.98m (49-1.75).

A pair of juniors, Sean Banda and James House, qualified for the finals of the 100 meters after clocking times of 11.03 and 11.07, respectively.

Sophomore Alejandro Juan Torres was the No. 3 finisher in the 800-meter prelims in a time of 1:55.08 and will run in Friday’s final.

The meet concludes Friday with field events starting at 11 a.m. and track events starting at 12:40 p.m.
