RICHMOND, Va. – Elon University freshman setter Kodi Garcia has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. Announced Monday afternoon, Oct. 2, it marks the second consecutive week an Elon player has earned the honor.
Garcia helped Elon to a 1-1 week against CAA foes James Madison and William & Mary inside Alumni Gym. The freshman had one of the most notable matches in Elon history against the Tribe, posting 60 assists in a four-set victory over William & Mary. The 60 assists stand as the most in a four-set match since Nov. 12, 2005, when Natalie Moore posted 61 against Western Carolina. Garcia’s total is also the second-most assists in a match overall since October 2007, behind only Sydel Curry’s 62 last season in a five-set win at Delaware.
The CAA honor is Garcia’s second of the season. She was also named Rookie of the Week on Sept. 28 after a stellar opening weekend at the Charlotte Invitational. Courtney Carpenter also won CAA Rookie of the Week last Monday, Sept. 25, giving Elon three Rookies of the Week in six weeks of competition.
Other awards this week included Northeastern’s Amy Underdown repeating as CAA Offensive Player of the Week with McKala Rhodes of College of Charleston earning Defensive Player of the Week.
Elon will play three matches on the road this week, starting with the final non-conference tilt of the year on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. against North Carolina Central in Durham, N.C. This weekend, Elon will head to Hofstra and Northeastern to continue CAA play.
