Elon’s Johnson, Munford Take CAA WBB Weekly Honors

RICHMOND, Va. – Elon University women’s basketball picked up two CAA weekly awards on Monday, Jan. 22, with Malaya Johnson earning Player of the Week and Saadia Munford taking Rookie of the Week.

In what became a historic weekend for Johnson, the senior from Mount Airy, N.C., had a big two-game stretch in a pair of home victories over Towson and Delaware. She scored 16 points in both contests while missing just four shots all weekend, hitting 15-of-19 to shoot .789 from the floor. Johnson also had a big double-double against Delaware with 13 rebounds, polishing off a special day in which she became the 24th member of Elon’s 1,000-career point club. Johnson has now scored 16 points in each of Elon’s last three games after not reaching double figures in any of the team’s first four CAA contests this year.

Munford helped Elon to the 2-0 weekend by averaging 10.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.5 assists per game last week. She was also a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. In the win over Towson, she posted a career-high 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting to go with four assists and three steals. In the win against Delaware, she went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe, collected five rebounds and three steals and did not commit a turnover in 27 minutes of action. This is the second CAA Rookie of the Week honor for Munford, as she also won the award on Dec. 26, 2017. Munford shared the Rookie of the Week award with Lizzie Oleary of Delaware.

The Phoenix will look to win a third game in a row when it visits second-place Drexel on Friday, Jan. 26, in Philadelphia. The Dragons are 6-1 in CAA play with their lone loss coming at 7-0 James Madison.
