College Baseball Final – Greensboro 9, Guilford 8

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College scored four eighth-inning runs to rally past Guilford College, 9-8, in nonconference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Guilford’s McBane Field.

The Pride (10-13) started the inning trailing 8-5, but took advantage of four walks and two wild pitches by two Guilford pitchers to make up the difference and go ahead. Blake Carroll doubled home Daniel Efird, who led off the frame with a walk. Lincoln Hewett and Brady Dignan drew walks, which chased Bailey Garfield in favor of Josh Shepherd. Carroll scored on a wild pitch to get Greensboro to within 8-7. After Tyler Price walked to reload the bases, Cameron Peters and Scotty McGuire delivered consecutive RBI groundouts to shortstop, which put the Pride in the lead.

Guilford got the tying run to second base with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Joseph Hoelle retired Ryan Hill and then got Shepherd to line out to center, which ended the game. Hoelle entered the game with one out in the eighth inning in relief of Christian Kercado, who picked up the win with 1.2 scoreless innings.

Carroll led Greensboro’s offense with three hits and two RBI. McGuire also knocked in a pair. After Guilford touched three Pride pitchers for eight earned runs in 5.2 innings, Kercado and Hoelle shut the Quakers out for the final 3.1 frames.

Rocco Wilcox had three of Guilford’s 15 hits. Shepherd, Mitchell Stumpo, Sam Gerald, Michael Pinkston and Logan King each had two hits for the Quakers. Trevor Denton plated three runs and Pinkston had two RBI.
