College Baseball Final: Greensboro 4, Guilford 2:Parker Strader(Northeast Guilford HS) picks up the Win(2-0) with Michael Garvey(Northwest Guilford HS) and Hunter Curtis(Southern Alamance HS) among GC Pride leaders/Guilford’s Logan King(Northern Guilford HS) and Ellis Stokes(Dudley HS) help Quakers at the plate

HIGH POINT, N.C. – An early three-run output in the first inning helped Greensboro College to a 4-2 victory over Guilford College Saturday afternoon at BB&T Point Park.

Michael Garvey Jr. got things started for the Pride with a single to shortstop before heading to second on a fielder’s choice from Hunter Curtis. Garvey and Curtis then advanced on a Chance Bryant sacrifice bunt. Scotty McGuire singled to right field to send home Garvey and Braxton Rupp hit a single through the left side to score Curtis.

Greensboro tallied one more run off an RBI single from Jacob Rodriquez to take the 3-0 lead.

Guilford responded in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring the score within one run. Giovanni Garcia and Logan King both reached on singles and advanced after a sacrifice bunt from Ellis Stokes. Garcia went on to score on a ground out from Dylan Tuttle and King rounded home on an Anthony Cuozzi single.

The Pride’s Clayton Slater came into the game to pitch and got a strikeout for the third out to maintain a 3-2 advantage.

Greensboro’s Kendal Tucker started the top of the eighth inning with a double before scoring on an RBI single from DJ Lowry to stretch the lead out to 4-2.

Cameron Edmonds pitched the final two innings for the Pride and allowed only one Quaker hit to earn his second save of the season. Parker Strader earned the win on the mound with four strikeouts, six hits, and two runs allowed in 6.2 innings of work.

Guilford’s Zach Dinkins was credited with the loss as he fanned four batters but allowed six hits and three runs in six innings pitched. Ryan Hill finished out the game for the Quakers.

Offensively, Brett Shapcott finished 2-for-4 at the plate for Guilford while Tuttle and Cuozzi both had an RBI.

For the Pride, Rodriquez went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Garvey finished 2-for-4 with a double as well.

Coach Nick Black’s Quakers welcome Greensboro to Edgar H. McBane Field tomorrow (2/23) for a 1 p.m. rematch.
