HPU Track & Field: Big South Championships Day 2

Stainback and Bouchrak Claim Individual Titles; Panthers lead entering Day 3

HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point University men’s track & Field finished day two of the 2021 Big South Outdoor Championships with three individual championships and a first-place team score of 80.

We just had a lot of backstories of kids you know with important 7th place finishes along with all the champions. It was a pretty special day but, like we told them it’s kind of like halftime we had a really good first half now we got to go finish it tomorrow.”

Panther Performances

  • Gabriel Stainback kicked off the day for the Panthers with a Big South individual title win as he earned first in the decathlon with a point total of 6833. It was an all Panthers podium as Evan Mills finished second and Stephen Binkley finished third.
  • Chris Van Niekerk made Big South history as he set a new personal best, meet record, facility record, and tied the all-time Big South record in the shot put. His mark of 18.67m earned him a Big South Individual championship.
  • Hocine Bouchrak earned a Big South individual title in the Steeplechase with an 8:49.11 first place finish under the lights in Vert Stadium. HPU finished 1,4,5,8. Bouchrak took first with a time of 8:48.11, while Stephen Gray finished fourth, Aiden Morrison fifth, and Jake Tarosky eighth.
  • A great finish between Paul Gore and Deron Dudley put them both through into the 100m finals on Wednesday. Dudley finished second overall with a personal best time of 10.48, while Gore finished third with a time of 10.48 in what was a photo finish in the 100m. While Gore finished ahead of Dudley with a time of 21.08 in the 200m while Dudley finished with a time 21.12 while Gore ran 21.08.
  • Freddie Allen III posted a podium finish for the Panthers finishing second in the long jump with a mark of 7.21 m.

Panther Performances

  • Zoe Geis picked up her second individual Big South Championship as she won the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 10:25.90 which set a new meet record.
  • Madison Reynolds claimed HPU’s first Big South Heptathlon individual championship since 2006 as she set a facility for Vert Stadium with a score of 4916 points. The Reynolds individual win swung the Panther women into first place.
  • Alicia Dawson won the first long jump individual championship for HPU since 2003 as she recorded a jump of 6.10m.
  • Sydney Horn set a new Big South record, a new facility record, a new PR, and a meet record with a mark of 4.44m. Earning the 2021 Big South Women’s Individual championship in the pole vault. It was an all Panther podium as Sydney was joined on each side by Nathalie Elliott who finished second, and Mackenzie Horn who finished third.
  • Nyile Facey ran a personal best time of 13.43 in 100m Hurdles finishing first and qualifying for the 100m Hurdle final on Wednesday. Facey put herself in a great position to qualify for the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville. Facey is currently 33rd in the nation. She also qualified for the 400m hurdles with a personal best time of 1:00.41.
  • Famke Heinst finished second in the steeplechase with a time of 10:26.02.
  • Olive Allen qualified for both the 800m and the 1500m finals finishing first in the 800m with a time of 2:14.72 while also qualifying for the 1500m with a time of 4:46.76 placing seventh.
  • Leah Bolden qualified for both the 200m and 400m finals. She finished first in the 400 with a time of 55.51, Bolden finished third in the 200 with a qualifying time of 24.36.
  • Julia Newman finished second in the javelin with a mark of 39.59m, a personal best for her.
  • Jordan Morrison continued the theme of her season in which she continues to set personal bests. She qualified for the 400m hurdles as she finished third with a time of 1:00.48.
