Greensboro College Announces 2021 Volleyball Schedule
The Pride Return to Fall Action for the 2021 Season
GREENSBORO, N.C.—Greensboro College volleyball head coach Kevin Troup announced the Pride’s 2021 schedule earlier this afternoon, marking a return to Fall action for the first time since Greensboro’s appearance in the 2019 USA South Athletic Conference (USA South) Volleyball Tournament.
The schedule features 32 games, trips to two out-of-conference tournaments, mid-week non-conference action, non-conference matches against USA South West Division teams, and a full 18-match USA South schedule. The schedule’s size is over double what the Pride played in a shortened Spring schedule, postponed from the Fall of the previous year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of all NCAA Division III Fall sports championships.
Greensboro faces a challenging start to their season when they travel to Emory University for the Emory Invitational September 3-4. In addition to facing USA South West Division foes Covenant College and LaGrange College, the Pride will take on 2019 NCAA Division III runner-up Emory. The Eagles did not compete last season but finished with a 34-3 overall record in 2019 after winning five matches in the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Tournament. Emory would fall to eventual national champion Johns Hopkins University in the national championship game.
The Pride renews their rivalry with cross-town foe Guilford College on September 8 at Guilford. The Quakers have won the last four matches against the Pride, but come off a 1-9 Spring season in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).
A trip to Roanoke College awaits the Pride September 10-11 as Greensboro will play four matches in the Maroon Classic. The Pride will face Ferrum College and Randolph College on day one of the tournament. Hollins University and host Roanoke tangle with the Pride on the second day. The Pride and Maroons will meet one more time on October 26 inside Hanes Gym.
The Pride opens their home schedule on September 14 against Division II Elizabeth City State University. The Vikings and the Pride last competed against each other on September 9, 2017 as part of the Greensboro College Volleyball Invitational. Greensboro earned a victory over Elizabeth City State, 3-0.
Greensboro will meet Maryville College and Brevard College on Brevard’s campus on September 17. Maryville won the USA South title in 2019 and claimed the USA South West Division crown this past Spring over Covenant. The Pride will play three matches over the weekend as Greensboro finishes with a rematch against Covenant on September 18 at the Xcel Sportsplex in nearby Hendersonville, N.C.
The 18-match USA South schedule features matches exclusive to the east division of the conference. Greensboro will play a mixture of single matches during the week and tri-matches on weekends, playing all divisional foes twice. The Pride opens their conference schedule on September 22 with league newcomer Southern Virginia University and returns the match on October 13 at Southern Virginia. The Pride travel to Mary Baldwin University on September 28 with the Fighting Squirrels returning the match on October 19 inside Hanes Gym. The Pride faces rival Averett for the last time as a member of the USA South at home on October 6 and at Averett on October 28. Greensboro will host two conference tri-matches during the season with the first taking place on October 2 when the Pride host Meredith College and Pfeiffer University. All three teams will meet again on October 23 at Meredith. North Carolina Wesleyan College and Salem College come to Greensboro on October 16 for the Pride’s second home tri-match at Hanes gym, returning the September 25 tri-match with both teams at North Carolina Wesleyan. The Pride will face Methodist University and William Peace University at Methodist on October 9. All three teams will meet one more time to close the regular season at William Peace on October 30.
The USA South Athletic Conference Tournament will begin with the first round on November 2 and will conclude with the final two rounds on November 5-6. The tournament did not take place last season due to the cancellation of all Division III fall championships and the postponement of the season to the Spring. Spring competition featured separate divisional tournaments with no overall champion begin declared.
Coach Troup’s squad finished last Spring with a 7-7 overall record, 4-3 in official USA South play, with the schedule only featuring conference and non-conference matches against divisional opponents. The Pride finished 2019 with a 17-17 overall record and an 8-8 conference record, marking a 14-win improvement from Troup’s first season in 2018 and a three-win improvement from 2017.
