High School Football Tonight with Jamborees and Scrimmages:Big Battle with Grimsley vs. Dudley, and Whirlies find a way to win it

Big battles and I’m talking some Big battles in high school football tonight, over at Jamieson Stadium, on the Grimsley High School campus…

In our running score, Grimsley topped Dudley, 30-24…There were No PAT runs or kicks…Just lots of TD’s with Grimsley and Dudley..And one of the up-and-coming wide receivers in the city of Greensboro surfaced for Grimsley tonight, and that would be #3, from the G, Alex Taylor…Taylor was just tearing it up at the wideout spot for Grimsley tonight, and he did run the field, and caught just about everything that came in his direction, in both the Grimsley-Mount Tabor, and the Grimsley-Dudley games…

Alex Taylor has stepped it up to become one of the top high school football receivers in Guilford County, and joins Mehki Wall, over at Dudley HS, and Taylor’s teammate, Tyson Repser, as now the top receivers in town…

We also saw where Page topped Davie County, 14-6, over at Page tonight….Dudley was locked down right at 18-18 with Northern Guilford, but Dudley led most of the way, in that scrimmage….Grimsley got the best of Mount Tabor, 18-12…Northwest Guilford topped Southern Guilford, but we didn’t have a score on that game, but the Northwest Guilford defense, gave the NWG Vikings, the edge…

That Grimlsey-Dudley game was the “Game of the Night”, and it started like an Arena Football League game…We talked about Grimsley’s Alex Taylor, and the Taylor kid was on the Grimsley basketball team last year as a freshman, and he saw a lot of playing time, and he was with the football team in the Spring, but his playing time was limited, due to Grimsley wealth of senior receivers…

The Taylor kid can go get it, and Grimsley started out feeding him the ball from backup QB, Andrew Attmore, in the Mount Tabor game..When Grimsley got to the Dudley game, the Whirlies were going with their #1 signal-caller, their senior, Alonza Barnett III…

In the Dudley-Grimsley game, the Grimsley ‘O’ got the ball first, and they proceeded to move the ball on the 40-yard field, and Grimsley cashed in on a 10-yard TD run by RB Ja’carion Maynard…

The Dudley offense then got the Grimsley-Dudley game cranking, with an eight-yard run by Panther RB, Mike Shaw…Shaw gained 10 more yards and there was a pass from Dudley QB Jahmier Slade to Shaw, and Shaw took off on a three-yard run, and then the Dudley Panthers scored from four yards out, to make the score, Dudley 6, Grimsley 6…..Jaylan Richmond scored the Dudley touchdown…Things are all tied up, with 43:59 left in the football game..

Things start jumping/moving fast now, as Grimsley’s QB Alonza Barnett III connects with Tyson Resper on a 39-yard pass play, and then Maynard takes the ball in for the touchdown, from the Dudley one-yard line, and now Grimsley is back in front in this game, 12-6…

Don’t go anywhere, because on Dudley’s first play after the Grimsley TD, Dudley’s QB Jahmier Slade hits his favorite receiver Mehki Wall on full field-covering 40-yard touchdown pass…That makes our score, Dudley 12, Grimsley 12 and the game is On…

Grimsley’s Alonza Barnett III goes right to Tyson Repser on the next play of the new Grimsley possession, and the pass falls incomplete..Barnett rips off a real nice run, the he shoots a pass to WR Alex Taylor, and Taylor takes off on the run, after the catch, and Grimsley is just about in business again…Barnett gets sacked, on the next Grimsley offensive play, the Grimsley RB Maynard gets slammed to the ground and there is no gain on the play for Grimsley, but Dudley gets called for a facemask penalty, and this is the facemask penalty where you get called for grabbing your opponent’s helmet, and not the one where you forget to wear your COVID-19 facemask…

After the Dudley penalty, Maynard goes on a 12-yard run for Grimsley and the Whirlies get a big first down….Barnett takes off on a run that sets up the Grimsley TD, and then Barnett hits Alex Taylor for a TD pass, and this comes after a short Maynard run…
Grimsley now up 18-12….

Grimsley now re-takes the lead, 18-12…Dudley gets the football back and the Panthers take off running….It turns out to be a very quick possession for the Dudley Panthers, as they fumble the football, and it ends up back in the hands, of the Grimsley Whirlies…Grimsley RB Melton gets thrown for a loss on a run, and then Barnett hooks up with Diablo on a pass for a 10-yard gain….Barnett hits Resper for a 20-yard pass gain, and then Barnett goes to Taylor twice, and both passes fall incomplete, but Barnett comes right back to Alex Taylor again, and this time the pass is completed for a 12-yard Grimsley touchdown…Barnett to Taylor for the TD…Grimsley now up two TD’s on Dudley, 24-12….

On Dudley’s next possession, the Panthers go to their RB Mike Shaw again, and Shaw gives them a couple of key carries, and then Dudley goes to their RB Tyler Moore, for a short run, next Dudley calls on RB R.J. Baker, and Baker puts the bread in the basket, as R.J. scores the TD on a 15-yard run…Dudley cuts the lead back to one TD, Grimsley 24, Dudley 18…

Dudley sacks Grimsley QB Barnett and then Barnett takes off on a nice 14-yard QB keeper, and Grimsley has the first down that they were looking for….Maynard goes on a run for Grimsley, and he is tackled into the Dudley bench, along the Dudley sideline, and things really get chippy then….It was a huge hit on Maynard, and the Dudley bench erupted….Maynard on that run, gets tackled hard, and then the fireworks go off…

Grimsley comes back with Barnett to Resper incomplete pass, but then Barnett hits Alex Taylor again, on a 18-yard pass, and then Barnett comes right back to Taylor for the 22-yard TD pass, and Grimsley now leads Dudley, 30-18….

Dudley’s QB Jahmier Slade goes for it all to Mehki Wall, but comes up empty, and then after an R.J. Baker run, Slade tosses a 35-yard TD pass to Tyler Moore, and your score, Grimsley 30, Dudley 24….

Dudley sacked Barnett a couple of times, and then Grimsley sacked Slade a few times, and this scrimmage game was over, and it was a hard-fought one, with the final, Grimsley 30, Dudley 24

More coming up on other games, later on….

Bristol Carter was quarterbacking the Northwest Guilford Vikings tonight, and NWG chose their top athlete to run the offense when projected starting QB Tanner Ballou, injured his ankle in a scrimmage at WS Reagan, back on Wednesday…Ballou is in a boot, but he hopes to be ready for the NWG Vikings’ season-opener/home opener next Friday night, vs. the East Forsyth Eagles…NWG linebacker Xavier Simmons(not to be confused with the old LA Rams’ LB, Isaiah Robertson), will now be attending Missouri, and he will not become a part of the Virginia Tech Hokies football program…

Northwest Guilford gave a good account of themselves vs. Southern Guilford, and the NWG defense is expected to set the pace for the NWG Vikings 2021 season…Southern Guilford was led by their young QB Jamias Ferere, and Ferere is quite the athlete….He is 6’5/180 and we look for Ferere to become one of the top young QB’s in Guilford County….Ferere has all the tools to become one of the top quarterbacks, in Guilford County…He can throw the long ball, and he can hit his receivers in stride, and put the ball in their hands, as they hit the corners of the end zone…This kid should be a keeper for Coach Bear Bradley and the Southern Guilford Storm….

In the Northern Guilford-Dudley game, Dudley seemed to have the overall edge, and we have to remember, the coaches try and get as many kids on the field as they can…Dudley and NG ended up scoring-wise tied at 18-18, and Northern had the ball to begin the game…Northern got a couple of first downs running the ball, and NG was having success moving the football, until Dudley made some defensive adjustments….Some say, “it is not how good you are, it how quick and how good you are at making key adjustments”…The NG QB Larenz Smith was having success moving the ball for his Nighthawks, and not sure who #80 for Northern was, but this kid was finding space within the Dudley defense, and especially finding holes in the second and third tiers of that Dudley D….With their passing game clicking, Northern found their way to the end zone, and NG led early, 6-0….NG was getting lots of help from WR Manny Elliott, and from another WR, Jaden Hairston…Manny Elliott was making some athletic moves and he was part of one play that nearly sent a Dudley defender, to the hospital…

Dudley was not sleeping though, as the Panthers picked up points with a key pass from Panther QB Jahmier Slade, to Mehki Wall…For Dudley, it was way too smooth and way too easy…Game all tied up, now at 6-6…..

Dudley maintains offensive possession, after their TD pass to Wall, and Slade completes a pass to Nasir Newkirk…After the pass to Newkirk, Slade throws a bomb into the well, to his main target Wall..Slade to Wall, get used to hearing about the connection for this season, and with the Slade to Wall scoring play, Dudley now leads NG, 12-6…..Wall has such steady hands and he is also a strong pull-away receiver…

Dudley still has the ball, and the Panthers’ theory in their first game of the day is, Time is a wastin’…..Dudley’s top RB, R.J. Baker becomes the touchdown-maker, as he carries the football into the end zone, from 40 yards away….Dudley goes up at this point, 18-6……

Dudley then goes with their #2 quarterback, the freshman, Domaine Vann, and Vann got the offense moving with his legs, and he had some nice runs, but he did not show us the passing game, we saw when Dudley faced Mount Tabor, back on Wednesday, over at Dudley HS…

One of Vann’s passes was a super catch by receiver Savoi Edwards, and it went for a thirty-yard gain…Dudley can’t find the end zone on this drive/series and when Northern Guilford gets the ball back, the Nighthawks are ready to take flight…The NG QB Larenz Smith finds Louden Peters open, and NG cashes in for a TD, and now our score is Dudley 18, Northern Guilford 12….

Dudley’s Slade goes to Nasir Newkirk and then Dudley gets a run from R.J. Baker…Before you know it, it is getting late in this one-hour game, and Northern Guilford has one more good drive left in them…The Nighthawks get Austin Flippen running, and then backup QB Jack Mercer completes a key pass to Manny Elliott, and next up, Mercer goes to #80(Vance Bolyard), the kid we don’t have a name for, and #80(Vance Bolyard) catches the TD pass and we are tied up at 18-18, as time is set to expire…A hard-hitting game, and 18-18, as the clock strikes, 0:00….(Vance Bolyard, was #80, for the Northern Guilford Nighthawks.)

In the Grimsley-Mount Tabor game, the thing that stood out the most was the hit on Grimsley TE Nolan Albright…We hope and pray that he is OK tonight…He took a shot, from a Mount Tabor defender, and Albright was defenseless when he was hit in the head area in the open field…It knocked his helmet clear off of his head…And as he lay on the ground, he wasn’t moving for awhile…His eyes did not look good, but eventually he was able to walk off of the field, under his own power…The play occurred over by the Mount Tabor bench…Grimsley’s QB was also popped hard on the same play, and it seemed like the officials started calling sacks quicker and they were making sure the quarterbacks were being protected more after this series of hard hits…QB sacks, and the plays being blown dead early, were a common thing, later on after these big hits…The QB would be hit in the backfield, and it was a sack, and the play was dead…

Mount Tabor had the early advantage over Grimsley, as the Spartans relied on their QB, and he got them running downhill towards the Grimsley field house….#4 for the Spartans was moving his team, and he threw a TD pass, that put his MT team in front of Grimsley, 6-0….

Grimsley battled back and tied the game on a TD run by Jacrion Maynard…The TD was set up by a pass from backup QB Andrew Attmore to Tyson Resper…Game now tied up, at 6-6…..Tamorye Thompson comes up with some nice and big defensive tackles, and he stops MT from running off and leaving the Whirlies….Mount Tabor would mount another key drive, and the Spartans take a 12-6 lead over the Grimsley Whirlies…

Grimsley’s starting QB enters the contest, and Alonza Barnett III finds receivers Terrell Anderson and Alex Taylor open, and Barnett finishes off his series with a TD pass to Alex Taylor…Grimsley and Mount Tabor now tied, at 12-12…Grimsley gets a TD from Barnett to Terrell Anderson, and with that touchdown, Grimsley goes on to win this scrimmage game, 18-12….

That’s all I’ve got in me for tonight, and we will try and find more to add in here tomorrow…By the way, Southern Guilford(3-A), more than held their own, versus WS Reynolds(4-A)……

  1. Good to see….Good to see D.J. Reader’s mom(Felicia Ford Reader) there representing the Reader family on Friday night…D.J. with the Cincinnati Bengals now, and part of a Bengals’ defensive unit that includes three Guilford County kids in Reader, Larry Ogunjobi(Ragsdale HS), and Germane Pratt(High Point Central HS)….(The memory of D.J.’s dad, David Reader Sr. lives on in Guilford County.)

Good to see Coach Greg King, the head football coach at Northwest Guilford High School back in the late 90’s…Coach King, now retired, but he is an assistant coach for the WS Reynolds Demons…The first time I had seen Coach King in 25 years…His quarterback was Will Berry back in the day…Will Berry, of Berico Heating and Air Conditioning…

Good to see a lot of people over at Grimsley’s Jamieson Stadium on Friday night…Also again Good to See Nolan Albright walking off of the field, after taking a huge hit to the head, on Friday night….

  2. Great article! I am positive that you will see the Barnett & Taylor connection over & over this year. I am glad to see a lot of these kids working hard and taking their future serious. Grimsley has some special players and will receive offers through out the season.
