  1. Why aren’t more people not stating facts that although Greensboro Day played a great tournament they are a older private School that shouldn’t be playing in the Haeco. The age alone gives them the advantage. Also Andy why does the panel judge solely on points for All Tournament when a lot of the players just go for points and not do anything else during the game? I’ve watched guy’s over the past 3 days that got left off but did not receive any recognition for playing great all around basketball on both ends of the floor no (Cherry Picking) and half effort on the defensive end. Can anyone else please name some of these Great men and women who got left off because of not being the leading scorer at the end of the game. We need to Charge the Coaches for continuing to let this bad basketball to keep going on then we wonder why these players not getting college looks ( Not Looking For Selfish Players) folk. Look at the stats for yourself.

  2. You mean the age of the players or the school’s existence? Either way you cannot kick them out just because they are a private school. They been playin in and dominating it for years. Their kids deserve to be in the tourney just like any other kid.
One can argue Grimsley, Dudley and Smith also have an advantage with their academies and other programs, wbut that discussion can take on a life of it’s own.
I only see Albright and Young listed on the all tourney team who were also listed on the top scorers list. I know both to be very good all around players. There are five players who scored more than both of them and were not selected to the all tournament team.
The smith kid Richard Goods was selected and to me it was due to his rebounding and defense. Graves was not a top scorer and he made all tournament also due to his all around skills.
I SUSPECT all tourney team voting is usually done by coaches of the four top teams. Many times in other tournaments by the coaches of the two finalists. Guy must have asked Freddy quickly after the game for X amount of names then asked Grimsley’s coach the same thing.

  3. Key word Ball dominating for years and what good does that do for the tournament. Young was the MVP anybody there could see that was there and obviously you must have not been because Freddy wasn’t there. Age really of team really stop that defending re classed players. You must be a alum read the post I said they played a great tournament with great young men no discredit to GDS just facts. City schools do have great academics but No 5th year player’s!!!! Need comments from Basketball heads that was there.

  4. I’m just glad we were able to get the games in…So many college basketball games and college football bowl games are being shut down due to COVID, and credit to the Greensboro Sports Council, with Brett Weathersbee, Tyler Key, and Charlie Hall for working and leading the way to help insure that the games could be played…Thanks to Greensboro Sports Council for giving the kids a chance to get these games in…The Greensboro Sports Council deserves a trophy for their efforts here in 2021…

I am just glad/happy the kids got to play the games…Lots of talent out there on the court and I will come back in here later on and give more so-called analysis on what the young men and women did…..Also a shout out to honorary chairman of the tournament, Kevin McCoy, for the work he has done over the years with the tournament, from his playing days at GDS, to his role with the Sports Council..

Lots of good reps from my outdoor Sunday basketball court at Forest Valley…Page boys coach Evan Fancourt, Grimsley player Zacch Wiggins, spectator and former local boys coach Kenny Free was there, former Grimsley player and current AD Ethan Albright was there and he is a Forest Valley vet, Tyler Albright’s dad, Stuart Albright was from the Forest Valley court, saw Aaron Wiggins on YouTube yesterday playing for the Oklahoma Thunder, and he is from the Forest Valley court….Forest Valley repping well these days…

Also saw local coach and former Wake Forest player Delaney Rudd at the tournament and his daughter Lucky Rudd is now an assistant women’s basketball coach at Presbyterian, and his oldest daughter is head the women’s coach at Virginia Union….

Good tournament, and I am again just very happy that it could be played this year…
More talk and info on the tournament coming later on….Lots of people were able to listen to the tournament due to GreensboroSports Radio, and that’s a good thing too…

  5. GDS should and will always be in the Haeco. It is a great thing for our Public Schools to match up against a program like that. NW Guilford beat GDS back in Dec of 2018, my son was a freshman on that great Northwest team. Grimsley this year competed well against GDS. As a parent I love the competition. Plus, the money GDS brings in for “gate” is more than likely the most of any school, yet all the schools share in the gate revenue. As for your point Provoked thoughts, I watched a lot of basketball the last 3 days as well. Selfishly I wish my son(Connor) was considered for all tourney, if you watched him play he should be considered. Top 8 in points, 3rd in steals, 2nd in assists, and 13-14 from the line(93%), and 3rd in 3-pointers made. There was a ton of kids that played well. Yes, all kids should be considered, not just the top 4 teams, they need to look deeper in all the stats, not just scoring. Look at the end of the day, Andy is right, be glad we could even play, his staff does a great job covering all HS sports for Guilford County. Thank you Andy!

  6. If you watched the past 3 days there’s no way that you can say that Albright wasn’t deserving of his spot on the All Tournament team. He scored, was one of the top in the tournament in steals, and he had 19 pts and 8 rebounds in the championship game. I think if Scovens for Page plays all 3 days then he’s definitely on the All Tournament team. Everybody can’t make it but don’t discredit the players who did.

  7. Who said Tyler shouldn’t be on there Scovens definitely was worthy. And Jeff glad you used you real name this time in dad’s gone wild. I remember Mr. Sophomore 2000 yards. And once again didn’t discredit anyone read the whole article. Thanks for the Scovens comment definitely one of the best players in the state. Anymore names that was or should be mentioned? Get out you feelings.

  8. Provoked thoughts, not sure who you are, but glad to see you supporting this site and Andy. I am proud of both my boys!. Yes, Mr. Sophomore(Tanner) and my Senior Connor. Like your comment about Scov, really like that kid. And Jah Saigo from Ragsdale, heck of a player and family. I like Spencer Hairston’s game as well, knock down shooter from Dudley, also Cam Flippen, lots of talent..Tyler is a great athlete, really love his family as well. We have another Sophomore on Northwest Guilford, Jaylen Cross, outstanding potential. Hope he plays football next year for us. Be nice to know who @provoked thoughts is. Thanks again, Andy

  9. Some good and interesting thoughts coming in this year’s tournament, and there is not a list of criteria or parameters for who can and will be on the All-Tournament Teams, but from what I have seen and deducted from over the years, there are a few schools of thought…

One of the schools of thought on selecting All-Tournament teams, is the All-Tournament Team, should top-heavy with members of the teams that finished First, Second and Third in the tournament…
When you enter the tournament, your goal is to win the tournament, and you have to look toward kids on teams that came the closest to ending up winning the tournament…In many cases you will have players that put up huge/big numbers, but their team did not make it to the final four of the tournament…Numbers are good, but the goal is to bring home the Championship Hardware…The tournaments are about team production and not individual success…If you want to include players from teams that say finished 4-6, or further down the ladder in the final tournament results, the end all-be all, would be to have a First Team All-Tournament Group/Team, and a Second Team All-Tournament Group/Team…And that might be something to really look into as maybe a possible addendum for the future..
But if you are going to have Five All-Tournament players, and an MVP, I still think you need to put the top consideration on the players from the teams that finished One, Two, and Three in the tournament…Just my thoughts there, and others may agree or disagree, but that is what a discussion is supposed to be all about….

Also another school of thought is that a player should play in all three games of the tournament to get All-Tournament Team consideration…That is a tough one there, because sometimes a player can’t control the circumstances, and I don’t know all of the circumstances, from over the years, so I will leave that criteria out there for you…But just for discussion purposes only, if a kid missed one game and then comes into the tournament and scores 30 points a game for a team that finishes fourth, fifth, sixth, or seventh, or in that direction, should he still be considered for the All-Tournament team??? Say he scored a total of 45 points in one game, and his team still did not make the Final Four, should he be on the All-Tournament Team, when you only have say five spots on the All-Tournament Team…

Just a few thoughts….But still, if a family decided to take a Christmas Vacation, and the had to miss the first two games of the tournament, and then they show up for the last day, and the player goes out and hits 32 points to lead his or her team to the Title, do you put them on the All-Tournament Team for just one game played, but they scored 32, and their team won the Title….

Just for the sake of fantasy basketball, I would have liked to have seen a Grimsley team, with the old Kiser Tigers bunch that included Travis Shaw, Tyler Albright, Jordan Wall, and Jackson Noble…Wonder what kind of difference that Travis Shaw would have made in the game for Grimsley, if he would have been in basketball shape, and he would have decided to play basketball for the Whirlies this season….He is a full time football man now, but I can’t help but wonder if he would have been a boost to the Whirlies efforts, if would have been in the middle/post for Grimsley in the Championship Game…
If Grimsley would have knocked off Greensboro Day School for the title, Tyler Albright would have been getting my vote for MVP…We all said that kid plays a lot like Thomas Hennigan, who used to be with Northwest Guilford and Albright, is player with a lot of heart and basketball soul…

My theme for the girls this season was, “She’s got what it takes and she knows how to use it”…From the old song, My Baby Loves Love, from may moons ago…For the boys, the theme was “They’ve got it in them, you have to bring it out of them”…And that is what the boys coaches had to do…Bring it out of these kids…It is in there, let’s see you get them using it to our team’s advantage…

Sydney Roberts was a blur for the SEG girls….She got up and down that court in a hurry, and she knew how to finish…That was a key for both the boys and girls, being able to finish…As the girls coach from Northwest Guilford, Coach Hackett said, the square on the basket/backboard is your best friend, know how to use it to your advantage…And that is so true…The SEG girls have a very under-the-radar group of kids….Roberts, McKenzie Harris, Reagan Harris, Stevens, Owens, Dominique Walker, some of these kids, like Walker, I had never heard of before, but Walker, and all of these kids are excellent players…Page saw kids like Caroline Kelly, Candice Williams, Hattie Sloyan, Sutton Sherrill and others that are improving….Northwest with Mas Mosbacher, Madison Young, Bel Varadi, plus the two freshmen Apple and Rumple, they are part of the future at NWG, as are the post girls Snyder, Huffines, Dutton and Vernon…NWG is loaded with young talent….NWG at Northern Guilford next Tuesday night…Ragsdale with Vitoria Boddie, Erin Mackie, Mya Patrick, Patel and Atwater…The Metro 4-A girls battle this season is going to a real war….

That’s a look around at the top Four Girls teams from the tournament….

Will continue these thoughts with a look at the boys teams next…Have mainly been talking about teams that we saw playing LIVE during the tournament, and one more name to keep in mind for the girls is the Wyrick girl from Greensboro Day School….Only a freshman, and she will become a much stronger player as she gets older….

One more thought, and then we will switch comment boxes and get on with the boys, an idea to move the Tournament to before Christmas has been raised, and what do you think about??? Might not be a bad idea…You get the Tournament games in before Christmas, and then families are free to travel as they want, during the rest of the Christmas Holiday….Say this year you played the Tournament the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before Christmas, instead of the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday after Christmas???? Might be an idea worth looking into/researching….Might help increase attendance, you never know…

One more key thought, and then it is on to the next project/comment box…Get your team to finals, and you will get people talking about your team, and you will be assured to get players on the All-Tournament Team…To my knowledge, the Southeast Guilford girls have never been in this tournament before, the boys from SEG were, but not the girls, and coming into the 2021 Tourney, nobody was talking about the SEG girls, but now they are…Falcons finish First, and now Falcons are on the map for 2021….News coming in from Forest Oaks, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!!!

That is how you get to the top….Really the same story for the Grimsley boys…They gave GDS a great game in the Finale for the boys, and Grimsley came in at (10-0), and there are lot of people talking about Grimsley boys hoops these days..

  10. Glad they got to ball out given this pandemic spiking up again. I liked the all tourney team. I don’t think the selections were all about who got buckets. The stats prove that. Only a limited amount of selections. End of the day it does not matter. No d1 coach ask a prospect if he made all haeco tourney team. Coach calapari will not be rushing to see Andy list of all tournament selections. Sorry Andy lol.
Gds kid deserved the win. I’d like to see more private schools in it. Also more schools from other conferences. Nw page grimsley etc playing each other ten times a year is madness. Pretty sure those coaches do not want that at all.
I’ll touch the reclass thing ..it is not illegal I am just mad I was not aware of it when I played. If the maturity level not there why not reclass? Some kids start school early so let them repeat if the parents think it can benefit them later on.
Or it could be due to academics. Whatever the reason is A parent has a right to do what is best for their own kid and send them to whatever school they want to. If a parent wants to do it to get a scholarship and it works heck yeah good for them they saved a lot of money and maybe a kid gets to pursue his or her dream.
If anyone has a problem with that then go kick rocks.
Do you worry about your own and keep it moving.
Cross a wicked prospect age size athleticism is nice. Good upside potential. Needs to stay on that AAU circuit but dominate it. That is where the real looks happen. Not the haeco or this whack public school league with all due respect. Yeah I said it. AAU brand ball is where it happens for d1 looks.

  11. Jeff agree on jah scovens
I’d also add Aaron from Ragsdale another great kid high motor humble kid.
Wanna recognize scovens always liked him
Late bloomer glad to see him operate.
What about Mr Hancock too love his dad good man good kid too.

  12. Andy u thinking too high level
When you dealing with parents alumni you never gonna win boss
    Appreciate you.

  13. Provoked I got no issues with you ok
Just curious who u think should be on there
Give me your all tourney team please?

  14. This post may end up becoming the All-Time information overload post, but we do need to bring some attention to the boys for their efforts in the tourney too…

Coming to mind quickly are couple of guys that have not received much pub so far, and that would Markquan Gilbert from Smith, and Julius Reese Jr. from Greensboro Day…Gilbert scored Smith’s first nine points of the game in the Golden Eagles win over Page in the men’s Third Place Game, and when you looked up on the scoreboard the score was Gilbert/Smith 9, Page 9, early in the game…Gilbert kept the Golden Eagles in the game, and they went on to win it…Gilbert finished with 24 points in 18 minutes…He was 8-10 from the field and 8-12 at the free throw line….He played the entire fourth quarter of the game, with four fouls, and never had to step away…Big-time effort there….

Julius Reese Jr. had 7 points in the GDS boys Championship Game win over Grimsley and he had 12 points for the Bengals in their semifinal victory over Smith….Reese had four points in GDS’ opening round win over Southeast Guilford….The young man flies a bit under the basketball goal, but he is very talented, and sometimes gets overlooked in a group of players like the Bengals have with Young, Graves, Zanoni, Noble, Collins and others…Reese is a big and important piece of the GDS Bengals’ puzzle….

From Grimsley we have all been highly impressed with the body of work that Tyler Albright is bringing to the table, and along with the small guard Jordan Wall, taller guard Jayden Watlington, and the young freshman Zacch Wiggins, all of the above have been getting the word, but sort of under the wraps has been Alex Taylor..Taylor is smooth guard and he also does a good job of guarding his man, whether he has the ball or not….Taylor is a smooth operator, and he really has a nice flow about his game…If you had to take a small man into a big commotion/trouble spot, you would not mind calling Jordan Wall, and seeing if he could come with you…That little man, will take on any challenge, or at least it looks that way, from where I am watching….

From the Page Pirates fourth place team, it was the reality of the unknown players…We had never seen much of Jordan Walden-Weaver, Alex Jones, or Jaden Hall before the HAECOisHiring Tournament, but those three guys combined to play 28 minutes in the last game of the tournament for Page….They accounted for 7 of the Pirates 39 points, and as a three-man assembly line off of the Page bench, they pulled down together, a total of 9 rebounds…Not bad for kids that had not been all that busy, before Christmas….

Of the games we saw in person, another kid we saw for the first time ever, was Jason Hancock, from Southeast Guilford High School…Never heard of him before…..We knew of Friday, Higgins and Liggins, from SEG, but not Hancock…..You just hope he sticks with the SEG Falcons….He was the top scorer in the tournament with 55 points, and he averaged 18.3 points per game in the tournament….That is what you call, “Putting your Jason Hancock on it/on the Tournament”…..

Another solid reserve, who I think is really coming along, is Jordan Moody from GDS…He gives them solid work off of the Bengals bench…I do want to see more of Jaylon Bumpass from Grimsley….He is a freshman, who I think might be able to do a few things….

Most steady Dudley Panther we saw on opening might have been Tre McNeil….

That is pretty much the word on the players we saw during the tournament who we thought could use some extra pub…You have others on your mind, and let’s hear about them too…

Over the past few days, I have given you folks a good load to work with….

  15. Love the talent, college level players this year in the Metro 4A. We had a great summer this year for the Gaters, guys like Scovens, Jah Saigo, Nolan Hodge and Jackson Helms from Northern, my son Connor and Drew Watkins from NW, Brent Randleman and Julius Hairston from Piedmont. I love your comment 2 cents about Summer ball, you don’t have to play on a shoe team, grassroots is still a good show, and that is when you get noticed in the summer. The Haeco was a great success thank you to the sports council and Andy for all they do. I also like Jason Hancock and his family. Hope he stays at SE Guilford. He played well. Don’t really have any comments or thoughts about reclassify. Up to the parents to decide that. Looking forward to a great Jan-Feb in the Metro 4A. Appreciate you Andy

  16. Provoked thoughts that wasn’t for you because obviously you weren’t the person who mentioned Albright. There was somebody else if you look who said all he did was score. So how about you get out YOUR feelings. There were alot of great players on display such as Saigo from Ragsdale, Ballou and Cross from NW, Gilbert from Smith and Hairston and Flippen from Dudley. Like I said previously, everyone can’t make it, so don’t downplay those who did. If you didn’t downplay anyone, then my comment wasn’t for you.

  17. He averaged 17 pts a game while only averaging 7 shot attempts a game. This is a true model of efficiency and game IQ. If these stats are accurate, this is a coaches dream. Players don’t realize that when they get to college, they will typically not get 10-15 shot attempts per game (at least not as a freshman) to have an impact. This player also happens to be a 2 way player and guards either the opponents 1 or 2 scoring option.

My guess is this player will make a great college player.

Kudos to the Haeco and Greensboro Sports for publishing the advanced stats. Curious why turnovers omitted as it helps with a better overall perspective.

PS-I am not related to this player or any player at the Haeco.

  18. End of the day disagree with the team is fine but chill on the reclass and oh gds this that the other stuff. I got no dawg in this fight. Gds kids deserve a chance to just like page nw grimsley etc. Is their fault they play hard and win? They need to back out the tournament because they win a lot?
Mr ballou we gonna respectfully agree to disagree on the brand circuit angle.
From a power five d1 perspective ok….read those last few words power five d1 hope u hear me ok
U have to be on the brand team period. Why players like cross and young give themselves that chance to get to that next level.
The YMCA sportsplex tourney teams days are over boss.
If I am wrong show me a power five recruit who was not on eybl, adidas gauntlet or the ua circuit?
Yet some folks here wanna argue about who Joe sierra or whoever choose for a haeco all tourney team lol. Madness. Even worse now got Mikey Williams dad making up a school for elite kids these days. Kanye has a team for elite players and bet he ain’t coming to no haeco to recruit these all around players.
Guilford need to focus on the development that is lacking and is needed.

  19. Not sure who all is on the media voting panel for the HAECOisHiring.com Tournament, but Joe Sirera from the News and Record/HSXtra.com is and I would think Bob Sutton was a voter, since Bob was covering the tournament in part, for the News and Record, and you have Dennis White and myself from GreensboroSports.com/GreensboroSports Radio who vote, and some of the local sports photographers, like Brian Hall from WFMY TV, and the photographer from Spectrum TV they may have been media voters, and maybe Timmy Hawks from FOX 8 if he was still there when the ballots went out, and possibly Joe Daniels from the Carolina Peacemaker Newspaper, as Joe was there at tournament every day…Joe Daniels a photographer for the paper and also a sports writer for the Peacemaker….That would part of the panel of voters, but all-in-all there seems to be a good group on this year’s All-Tournament teams…Plus Jeff Mills, formerly with the News and Record, and this year he was pulling duty in Rob Goodman’s leadership role of the media at the tournament, Jeff also may have been a part of the voting process…Sure there may be some other voters that I am leaving out, but not aware of all parts of process…

Just giving the parts that we can, and great job by the media covering this year’s event with Joe Sirera and Bob Sutton from the N&R and their photographer, Kenneth Ferriera, plus Amanda Ferguson and Brian Hall from WFMY TV 2, Timmy Hawks and FOX 8, Lauren Walsh from WXII TV 12, Spectrum News and their top sports photographer(do not know his name), Joe Daniels from the Carolina Peacemaker, Dennis White and Don Moore from GreensboroSports Radio, and I am sure that there others that we are leaving out, but great coverage and work turned in, by all who were there for the event…

  20. @ 2 Cents I think you misunderstood me when I said “you don’t have to play on a shoe team, grassroots is still a good show, and that is when you get noticed in the summer”. I never said anything about power5, and of course I agree if you can play for a shoe team, do it, BUT it is not for the majority of next level players. As an example, our 2022 Gaters team played shoe teams in Atlanta, Charlotte, Pittsburgh and DC and Philly. Our kids on our grassroots team got offers, whether it be D3, D2 or D1, they got seen. Your comment about “U have to be on the brand team period. Why players like cross and young give themselves that chance to get to that next level.
The YMCA sportsplex tourney teams days are over boss” First of all, you play YMCA and Sportsplex back when you are in 3rd, 4th. 5th grade. Shoe teams start at 14U. Not really sure of many 5th graders that can play on a shoe team. Let me know if you find one..So, again, the majority of college level, aspiring next level players are playing grassroots and it was a good show..

  21. GDS needs to bring in 7 private schools and play a tournament and let the high schools play there tournament. GDS recruits kids and can reclass them. I wonder how many they would win if they played teams like Oak Hill or IMG. GDS should win every year. They have a very clear advantage. I wish the high schools would start looking for another holiday tournament to attend.

  22. Clint well said. GD still a awesome program NW not the only team to win against the mighty GD.

  23. So “GDS recruits kids?” Of course they do, and so do all of the other successful high school teams in Guilford County in football and basketball. Whether it’s an academy, an IB program or paperwork for a house or apartment the family doesn’t actually live in, how many athletes on the best teams in Greensboro actually live in that school’s attendance zone? How about the Grimsley QB who previously played for Page but actually lives at Stoney Creek, which is in Eastern Guilford’s attendance zone? How about the Hookers living across the street from Southwest but playing for Dudley (and then Alston playing for Ragsdale, too)? Or Keenan Allen and his brother, back in the day? How many different high schools did they play for without actually living near those schools?

Recruiting didn’t seem to matter when David Price was bringing in all of those kids who didn’t live in Dudley’s attendance zone and winning the HAECO, did it? But then GCS tightened up Dudley’s “academy” scam for a few years because it was so flagrant (kids enrolling in the academy to go there, then dropping out of the academy and into easier classes at Dudley but not being sent back to their “home” school). Price retired before helping his son coach at McMichael, and the timing of his departure was no coincidence. He knew he’d lost his advantage and some serious payback was coming.

Reclassifying is a legitimate complaint. Older kids are a year bigger and more experienced, and that isn’t fair. It gives GDS a huge advantage. The only way around it would be to prohibit GDS from using players older than 18 in the tournament. I think they’d still win most years because nobody in Greensboro has been particularly good in the last 10 years, other than that Northwest team in 2018. But it would address a legitimate complaint.

But understand this: No GDS, no tournament. The Bengals’ fans buy most of the tickets and their alumni and families buy most of the tournament sponsorships. If they’re out, the tournament will be gone within a year because the money isn’t there without GDS.

There are a ton of great kids and great coaches here, but high school sports in Greensboro ain’t what it used to be. I haven’t seen a full house or even close to it on the main court at the tournament in 10 years, and the special events center isn’t that big. Too many other entertainment options today. That’s just the reality of it.

  24. Yes Schools recruit all the time. I don’t see anything wrong with it. Cornerstone Charter Academy have a sophomore ( I don’t want to say his name. Parents might not want his name out there) but this kid is special, fun to watch him play. I hope we can keep him the next 2 years but if any of these team get him that program will have the edge over the others. Play at a high level on offense and defense. Kid have that it factor.
