BLACKSBURG, VA –Elizabeth Kitley secured a double-double with 27 points and 15 rebounds to help the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team knock off the Boston College Eagles 85-62 at home Sunday.
In addition to Kitley’s strong outing, the Hokies (16-6, 8-3e) were led by Georgia Amoore, who had 14 points and four assists, and by Azana Baines, who added nine points and seven rebounds.
Virginia Tech pulled down 40 rebounds in Sunday’s game compared to Boston College’s 30, led by Kitley’s 15 boards. The Hokies also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 10 rebounds into 11 second chance points.
Virginia Tech forced 16 Boston College turnovers while committing 15 themselves in Sunday’s game. The Hokies turned those takeaways into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Cayla King led the way individually with four steals.
How It Happened
Virginia Tech started out the scoring by going on a 6-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Kitley, to take an early lead with 7:50 left in the first quarter. The Hokies then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-13 advantage. Virginia Tech capitalized on five Boston College turnovers in the period, turning them into seven points on the other end of the floor.
Virginia Tech kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 6:49 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Aisha Sheppard, to increase its lead to 28-18. The Hokies proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 37-26 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 19 points.
Virginia Tech continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on an 8-0 run to expand its lead further to 50-32 with 7:02 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Eagles had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hokies still entered the fourth quarter with a 63-46 edge. Virginia Tech turned four offensive rebounds into seven second chance points on the way to scoring 26 total points in the quarter.
Virginia Tech kept its lead intact before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Sheppard’s three, to grow the lead to 85-58 with 1:55 to go in the contest. The Eagles narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 85-62 win. Virginia Tech took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 22 points in the paint.
