RJ Reynolds seized the lead late in the second half & never looked back, defeating Reagan 58-44 in the first round of the Central Piedmont 4A Conference Tournament Monday night on the Raiders’ home floor in Pfafftown.

The fifth-seeded Reynolds, which advances to the semi-final round Wednesday night at West Forsyth with the victory, won for the second time this season at Reagan & avenged an 82-71 loss to the Raiders on their home floor last Friday night.

The Demons overcame a sluggish first half by both teams to take a narrow lead (24-21) inside the final minute of the second quarter. RJR never trailed again, leading by as many as nine points (37-28) in the third quarter and building to the final margin, it’s largest lead of the game. Reagan reduced it’s deficit to three (44-41) with 6:50 remaining after a Jalil Roger’s three-pointer. The Raiders scored only three more down the stretch as Sethan Reid hit two huge mid-quarter baskets to break the game open, one on a follow of a missed free throw that returned the Demons to a comfortable margin.

RJR center Wyatt Mowery, who fouled out early in the Demons’ loss last Friday, dominated the paint for the winner, scoring 16 points, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds (including three stick-backs) & blocked five shots. Reynolds, which was outrebounded by 22 in it’s loss to Reagan on Friday, reversed that margin in the win, rebounding the home team 39-28. PG MJ Raye led all scorers with 20.

Reagan’s Rogers, who led the winning effort at RJR on Friday with 32 points, scored 16 for the Raiders in the loss. Sophomore center Cooper Jackson added 10 points, five rebounds & five blocks. Reagan now awaits the finish of 4A conference tournaments across North Carolina to determine if it qualifies for the state playoffs, beginning next Tuesday.
