Some thoughts on tonight’s games and the playoffs in general…Coach Ed Johnson at Page High School says his Pirates are set to face a very tough Charlotte Catholic team tonight, down in Charlotte…Page girls a #29 seed and Catholic a #4 seed….Page at (10-12) and Catholic at (24-2)…
The best boys team in the state would be the Weddington Warriors, from the 4-A West…Very well-known for their football fortunes, and now the Weddington basketball boys have not lost a game in two years, going back to 2020….Weddington currently at (25-0) this season….
The Northern Guilford girls are (25-0), but they got seeded #2 in the Girls 4-A West division/bracket, with the Watauga Pioneers getting the #1 seed in the girls West bracket, with three losses on the season for Watauga…NCHSAA says Watauga had a stronger strength of schedule than Northern did, and that gave Watauga a higher rated RPI, going into the playoffs….And you can never count out Barbra Nelson and her Myers Park Mustangs girls…Tough road games for Northwest Guilford and Ragsdale tonight, but one of those teams, either NWG or Ragsdale, should be able to sneak out of there with a win tonight….Smith girls should produce a winner tonight, but Round Two will be looking tougher with probably Oak Grove coming to Smith…HP Andrews girls should always win their Round One game….Andrews(19-3) hosting McMichael(14-9) tonight…
High Point Andrews boys(15-8) at Forbush(20-5) in Round One…Smith boys(22-5) should roll at home vs. West Henderson(14-11)…Round Two should be tougher for Smith, with the projected appearance of the Concord Spiders coming to Ben L. Smith HS…The Dudley boys(20-8) have a great chance to win at North Iredell(17-8)…Southern Guilford Storm with a tough road trip coming up, going down to Kings Mountain….
Grimsley boys(23-3) at home vs. WS Reagan(15-9), should punch their ticket to Round Two…By Round Three, Grimsley could see Chambers coming to the Bob Sawyer Gym…But the Reagan Raiders at Grimsley tonight…Northern Guilford boys(16-8) with a very long road trip to TC Roberson(18-7), up in Asheville, but I like the Nighthawks chances in this game, with Hodge, Helms, and Elliott all playing at their max, NG can get it done…And with Bolyard controlling the inside, Northern can be a force..Ragsdale(19-6) home vs. Mount Tabor(18-8), and if you can avoid it, you don’t ever want to be playing one of those Andy Muse-coached Tabor teams in the postseason…But, Ragsdale, with Saigo in beast mode, can do some damage in the playoffs…Whatever you do, don’t let that Mount Tabor Spartans’ (18-8) record fool you….Page boys(11-11) at Alexander Central(22-4), and we can straight up front, the Page Pirate boys are built to beat people….Page seems to get off to a great start in some of their games, and then they will falter at the end, but if Page can find a way to play the full 32 minutes, they will win this game tonight….Pretty much the same story for NWG(13-10) at AC Reynolds(21-4), in Asheville….If the NWG boys are knocking down their three’s, then they will win this road game tonight….NWG is a very emotional team, and they need to get those positive emotions running really high tonight….And they, just like Page, need to get off to a good start tonight, and go 32 minutes of non-stop attacking basketball…All teams must come out attacking tonight, and do not look back….If your are hesitant in these playoff games, there will be no time for you to get it/bring it back….You must get it done RIGHT NOW!!!!!(This is it.)
I think we left the SEG girls out of our conversation up top, and we don’t want to leave anybody out…The SEG girls won the 3-A Title in 2019 and shared the 3-A Title in 2020, and now are up in the 4-A ranks, and will be visiting Marvin Ridge….SEG at #24, and Marvin Ridge at #29…SEG(13-10) and Marvin Ridge at (20-4)….Lots of work to be done by SEG to get the win, and SEG will need somebody to step up and help Sydney Roberts…Roberts can not carry the whole load on her own…..SEG Falcons won the HAECOisHiring.com Tournament back in late December, but have not been up to their regular snuff since back then….SEG went in as a #6, proceeded to knock off #3 Smith in Round One, and ended up winning the whole tournament, as the #6 seed…Maybe SEG can make a run, and do something similar here in the NCHSAA’s…
Looks like we have 9 GCS boys teams, and 8 GCS girls teams in the hunt, as we hit Round One, and you add in the Bethany Community School, NC Leadership Academy, and Cornerstone Charter School teams, and Guilford County has a loaded field for Round One…I think we will go something like (5-4) boys and (4-4) girls on Round One, and let’s see who all is left out there, as we head on to Round Two….From what I can deduct, this is the first playoff experience for Bethany Community School, NC Leadership Academy and Cornerstone Charter in basketball….Going to be tough for any of them to get a Round One victory….
