NCHSAA Basketball Regional Finals will not be held at Central Locations this year, but will be held at Eight High Schools across the state

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.The N.C. High School Athletic Association will not hold basketball regional championships at centralized neutral sites on Saturday, as been the case in years past.

According to an email from the NCHSAA to schools participating in the fourth round of the playoffs, four high schools in the east and four high schools in the west will host regional championships on Saturday.

In each region, the boys and girls regional championships will be held at a single location. For example, the 1A east boys and girls basketball regionals will be held at one high school, the 2A east boys and girls regionals at another high school, and so on.

  1. Stinks for the Northern Guilford girls. If the NCHSAA had stuck with home courts for the regional finals, like they said they were going to do a month ago, Nighthawks would’ve been home Saturday if they get past Chambers tonight. Instead, if they win they’ll be playing Lake Norman or Charlotte Catholic in Charlotte because that’s where all four remaining boys teams are from.

Another question is what happens if the regional finals are at a high school gym and all four schools bring a ton of fans? How are they all going to fit in the gym? If you only have to worry about fans from two schools or you’re playing in a Division II college gym you can usually make it work. I can definitely see security problems with 4-A West and the number of people trying to get into a high school gym in Charlotte on Saturday.

  2. Good points, and when they had the Regional Finals up at Lenoir-Rhyne a couple years ago, and the Southeast Guilford girls were there, you could barely get into the place there, it was so packed…One of the real hard parts is transitioning from one game to the next, getting the previous crowd out of the gym, and then getting the new crowd coming in…

I really liked the days of the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center, and the Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem….Those were very good Regional sites…UNCG was pretty good too…Got packed to some degree on Saturday night, if you had a local team, like Southwest Guilford boys, vs. a team out of Charlotte…

Last year was a different type of animal, because some fans were not going to come out to the games LIVE at all, due to the pandemic conditions, that were still at a high level of concern….

The high level of concern this year might be just trying to find a seat, or a place to stand….

  3. The Grimsley gym/Bob Sawyer Gym and the Dudley gym/Chester Bradley Gym would be great venues to host some of these games…Very large facilities and very ample parking……
