In late July, when discussing a possible contract extension for newly acquired quarterback Russell Wilson, Denver Broncos general manager George Paton said ” At the right time, we’ll get a deal done.” Apparently, that time has arrived.
Breaking: Broncos and Russell Wilson just reached agreement on a five-year, $245 million contract extension that includes $165 million guaranteed, sources tell ESPN.

Per ESPN’s Field Yates, Wilson is now the second-highest paid NFL quarterback — based on average annual value — at $49.1 million, trailing only Aaron Rodgers, who’s at $50.271 million. Wilson is directly ahead of Kyler Murray ($46.1 million), Deshaun Watson ($46 million) and Patrick Mahomes ($45 million) in the top-five.
In terms of total guaranteed money, Wilson trails only Watson’s $230 million. The new signal-caller in Denver will turn 34 in November.
Russell Wilson had 2 years, $51M remaining on his contract, so a 5 year, $245M extension means 7 years, $296M in total value for the almost 34 year old. https://t.co/qcKoC6COfx

Russell Wilson is a nine-time Pro-Bowl QB, a Super-Bowl champion, the winningest QB in his first 10 years in NFL history — and now the highest-paid Broncos player in history before he even takes a snap for the franchise.

The Broncos landed Wilson and a fourth-round pick in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks in March that sent quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, defensive lineman Shelby Harris and five draft picks to the NFC West squad. Denver hasn’t made the playoffs since the 2015 season, which ended with Peyton Manning helping the group to a Super Bowl 50 win over the Carolina Panthers in his final year in the NFL.
Since then, the organization has shuffled through both youthful and experienced players under center, including Lock, Trevor Siemian, Case Keenum, Joe Flacco and Teddy Bridgewater.
