Thursday/Friday Football Finish:I bet you didn’t see this one coming, as Southwest Guilford tops Northern Guilford, 48-14

*****Editor’s note, we started writing this on Thursday, and finished up on Friday, therefore the Thursday/Friday Football Finish…..*****

I don’t know about you, but me and many others, did not see this one coming…
Southwest Guilford 48, Northern Guilford 14

I mean SWG beating Northern Guilford would be big, but defeating them this big???

That is a difference of 34 points…That is like a difference of 5 touchdowns…Man, where did this come from???
We can remember a couple of weeks back, where Ragsdale topped Northern by one point, but even that seemed like it came out of nowhere, and some ways it did…Jack Mercer missed a bunch of snaps for Northern in that Ragsdale game…

Now what did we really learn on this, the Seventh Week of the 2022 high school football season…

Well, the separation continues with Grimsley burying Western Guilford…The big race right now in the Metro 4-A Conference, is for second place…Grimsley is the only (3-0) team in the Metro, after three full weeks of conference action…

The race for second place in the Metro, is heating up…We have Northwest Guilford, Page, and Southwest Guilford all at (2-1) in the Metro…Northern, Ragsdale, and Southeast Guilford are all now at (1-2) Metro…Three teams at (2-1), three teams at (1-2), and then you have Grimsley unbeaten at (6-0/3-0) and Western Guilford winless, at (0-6/0-3)…
Grimsley(6-0/3-0)
Northwest Guilford(4-2/2-1)
Southwest Guilford)4-2/2-1)
Page(3-3/2-1)
Northern Guilford(3-3/1-2)
Southeast Guilford(3-3/1-2)
Ragsdale(1-5/1-2)
Western Guilford(0-6/0-3)
*****Grimsley looking real sharp at #1, and then who is going to take home that #2 spot??? Next week you have Grimsley at Ragsdale, Northern Guilford at Northwest Guilford, Southwest Guilford at Southeast Guilford, and Western Guilford at Page…You have to see some real favorites in these game, but the real toss-up looks to be SWG at SEG, and NG at NWG might get real interesting too….*****

Mid-State 3-A action with Dudley beginning to flex their muscles again, and we saw that RJ Baker was back out there on Thursday night for the Panthers…Baker, Hicks, Southern…With those three RB’s, the Dudley Panthers have a very nice stable of runners..Nasir Newkirk and Kordell Barkley are becoming prime targets for QB Andrew Atmore II, too.
Mid-State 3-A, with Dudley at the top, and all of the other teams, looking up at the Panthers…Here is how they are stacking up right now, over in the Mid-State 3-A…
Dudley(4-2/3-0)
Southern Guilford(4-2/3-0)
Eastern Guilford(3-3/3-0)
Northeast Guilford(4-2/1-2)
Smith(1-5/1-2)
High Point Central(0-6/0-3)
*****Coming up next week we have, Dudley at Northeast Guilford, Eastern Guilford at WS Atkins, Smith at Southern Guilford, and High Point Central at Rockingham County…NEG over HP Central, 14-0, was fairly close on Thursday night…

High Point Andrews, now at (4-3/1-2), still has a chance to make some noise in the Mid-State 2-A Conference…West Stokes(3-3/1-2) at HP Andrews next Friday night….

From the Northwest Guilford-Page football game on Thursday night, NWG was very impressive…They have an explosive offense, and their defense did enough to keep them on top in this contest…Bristol Carter very big for NWG on offense, and he had some big plays on defense also…Carter a hugh scoop and score TD, he caught a TD pass and a two-point conversion pass, plus he had a 60-yard punt return that led to points for the NWG Vikings…Carter can go, and he does the punting for NWG too..We will go with Carter as our Steak n Shake Player of the Game on offense for the NWG Vikings…NWG is going to keep on working on their overall kickoff game…They kicked four straight balls, on kickoffs, out-of-bounds during one stretch of the ball game…

Our Player of the Game on defense for Northwest Guilford was linebacker, Thomas Orrell…Orrell made a number of key plays in the Page game, and I think he had pick, or a key fumble recovery in the contest…NWG was playing strong defense most of the game, but Page would not lay down, and the Pirates, behind their QB Jerron Blackwell, kept on striking back at the NWG Vikings…Page would not go home, until they loaded up their bus, and took off, as the game clock finally hit 0:00….

The starting quarterback for the Page Pirates, Marquis Lewis, was injured early in the contest, and he did not return, and this afforded Jerron Blackwell several key opportunities to be the Page Pirates’ team leader…

Page needs to get Lewis back, he will be a key component for the Pirates, as the playoffs get nearer…

The NWG QB Tanner Ballou was very smooth back there in the formation on Thursday night…Short passes, mid-range passes, long passes, he was hitting all of the above on Thursday evening…I bet you Ballou must have thrown at least 40 passes in the Thursday evening contest for the NWG Vikings…

Very good balance of running and passing for NWG, and Mike Godette got NWG running on offense, and then he got some backup help from Ryan Debow, and Stewart Spagnola…That was a good compliment of runners for NWG…

Here is how that scoring went down in the Thursday evening game, with Page vs. Northwest Guilford…….
9:13 left in the First Quarter:Ryan Debow on an 8-yard TD run for Northwest…The two-point run failed, and it is,
Northwest Guilford 6, Page 0
:55 Seconds left in the First Quarter it is Mike Godette on a 6-yard TD run, and the two-point pass fails, and we have, NWG 12, Page 0
End of First Quarter:NWG 12, Page 0
8:51 remaining in the Second Quarter, Page gets on the scoreboard with a 13-yard TD pass from Blackwell to Peguese..The Tylar Elliot kick was good, and our score reads:NWG 12, Page 7
Halftime:NWG 12, Page 7

11:50 Third Quarter, Bristol Carter got a 15-yard ‘Scoop and Score’ TD, on a fumbled kickoff return by Page…Carter put the cherry on top of the Thursday, when he caught the two-point pass conversion, and NWG moved ahead in the game, 20-7…

Carter came right back and scored again for NWG, when he hauled in a 23-yard pass from NWG junior QB Tanner Ballou, and then Ballou pulled off the two, when he hit Trent Cloud, for the conversion play…New score, NWG 28, Page 7…
End of Third Quarter:NWG 28, Page 7

The scoring pace picks up for Page, as we hit the Fourth and Final Quarter of the ballgame…
11:53 Fourth Quarter, Jerron Blackwell gets a 1-yard TD run for Page, and with the Elliot kick, up and good, Page has cut the NWG lead in half…NWG 28, Page 14…
10:06 left to play in the Fourth Quarter, and it is Maurice Andrews on a 14-yard TD run for the Page Pirates, and add in the Elliot PAT kick and the Pirates have made this a one-touchdown game, as the updated score rings out,
NWG 28, Page 21…
9:11 Fourth Quarter…Northwest Guilford is not ready to put this game to bed yet, as the Vikings get themselves a 13-yard TD run from Stewart Spagnola…The Nate Wallace PAT kick misses, and the new score says, NWG 34, Page 21…That was a big score, and a game turner/game changer for NWG..
7:04 to go in the game, and Ryan Debow comes up with his second TD of the contest, as he gets in on a 1-yard touchdown carry, this time the Nate Wallace kick is true/good, and NWG goes up 41-21, over the Page Pirates…
5:42 to play in this Thursday night high school football game, and it is the Page Pirates’ quarterback Jerron Blackwell going 32 yards to end zone for another Page Pirate score…Elliot is good on the PAT kick, and the score goes, NWG 41, Page 28…
2:50 remains in the Fourth Quarter, when Stewart Spagnola makes his way back into the paydirt, scoring for the Vikings on a two-yard carry, and Wallace is good on his PAT kick, and it is now, NWG 48, Page 28…
Time for just one more score, Blackwell runs across the goal line, and with his final TD, the game clock hits
0:00 and there will be no XPT try for Elliot, because this game is finished/complete/over…you
FINAL SCORE:Northwest Guilford Vikings 48, Page Pirates 34

We finish the Thursday Night Finish just in time to make the early Friday Morning Rounds…This gives a good high school sports section for your Friday readings….

Madison Young from the girls basketball team, and Walter Turner from the football team, the 2022 Homecoming Queen and King, at Northwest Guilford HS….

  1. Hicks didn’t play the last two games for Dudley and you mentioned him both weeks. There were four rbs who all contributed tonight Rj, Asa, LJ and brown.

  2. This is a crazy season! You got Northern beating SE by 17 but Northern losing to Ragsdale and Southwest. Southeast blew Ragsdale out. This lets you know it’s about match ups.

  3. What’s the word on Hicks???

As of last week, he was still the leading rusher for the Dudley Panthers…Going by the MaxPreps.com stats…I always look him up to spell his name right, Jailen Hicks…RJ Baker, LJ Southern, Asa Bonds is it, and who is Brown…Is that one of the new kids???

    Updating, the updates…

  4. Jailen has been out the last two weeks but should be back anytime soon. Asa Bonds is a senior, Rj is Rj of course, LJ is a sophomore and Brown is a sophomore who missed the first 5 games due to injury.
