N.C. A&T Beats Norfolk State for Sixth Straight Win
The Aggies intercept four NSU passes, including one for a touchdown.

EAST GREENSBORO – A certain resiliency is developing within the North Carolina A&T Aggies football program. They overcame an 0-3 start. They overcame numerous injuries to their quarterbacks unit. They overcome a huge halftime homecoming deficit to win and remain in the hunt for the Big South Conference title.

This week, they overcame 14 players diagnosed with the flu, with four missing Saturday’s game against Norfolk State at Truist Stadium.

Yet, the Aggies intercepted four passes. Sophomore Bhayshul Tuten had another 100-yard rushing performance, graduate receiver Zach Leslie had another 100-yard receiving game and junior linebacker Jacob Roberts had another pick-6 as the Aggies downed fellow HBCU Norfolk State 49-24.

The win marked the Aggies (6-3) sixth straight as they improved to 5-0 at home. A&T also improved to 3-1 against HBCUs this season.

“We had guys get the flu and miss a whole week of practice,” said A&T head coach Sam Washinton. “I love saying no excuses, no regrets, but I’m here today with excuses because I’m a true believer in you play like you practice. This week, we had a lot of guys who didn’t practice. But, overall, I thought we made the plays we had to make in crucial moments, and that’s why we came out victorious.”

Washington had players such as Robert Porcher IV, rover A.J. Dupree, linebacker Herbert Booker and cornerback Aaron Harris fill in nicely for the players who were ill. Harris had two interceptions, and Dupree led the Aggies with two tackles for loss.

A&T needed those next-man-up performances because the Spartans (1-8) played their former Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) with a lot of HBCU pride on Saturday. After Roberts returned an Otto Khuns interception 22 yards for a touchdown, the Aggies looked in complete control with a 21-0 second-quarter lead.

But the Spartans switched quarterbacks from Khuns to Jaylen Adams, and it proved effective. Adams led the Spartans on a 17-play, 75-yard drive that ended with him scoring on a two-yard run. On the Spartans ensuing drive, Khuns came off the bench for one play and tossed a 41-yard TD pass to Collis Pride to get the Spartans to within a touchdown at 21-14.

However, A&T graduate quarterback Jalen Fowler got his team going again by leading a two-minute offense down the field. He completed a 26-yard pass to Taymon Cooke and a 31-yard pass to Leslie, setting up a 6-yard TD toss to Tuten for a touchdown as the Aggies went into the locker room at the half holding a 28-14 lead.

“I’m telling you; he has a good football team,” said Washington about Norfolk head coach Dawson Odums, a former defensive starter at N.C. Central who Washington coached when he served as NCCU’s defensive coordinator in the mid-90s. “They are coming. I told (Odums) I would hate to play against you in a couple of years. If they continue on the right path, they will be a tough team to beat in a couple of years.”

Odums’ Spartans even opened the second half with a seven-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a Khuns 1-yard TD run to answer the Aggies late second-quarter touchdown. After a 6-yard touchdown run from A&T freshman running back Wesley Graves, the Spartans got a 46-yard field goal from Grandin Willcox to make it a 35-24 game with 2:29 remaining in the third quarter.

But the Aggies defense would take over in the fourth quarter. A Karon Prunty interception that he caught after it was batted in the air four times halted a promising Norfolk drive. Another Norfolk drive ended when Harris jumped the route on an Adams pass and returned the INT 37 yards to set up a 5-yard Tuten touchdown that gave the Aggies a 49-24 lead.

“I am very fond of cornerbacks,” said Washington, who played five NFL seasons as a cornerback. “To see (Harris) sit down and drive on that ball the way he did on that play was very exciting and pleasing to watch.”

Norfolk marked the Aggies final regular-season non-conference game of 2022. The Aggies will now try to make a march toward an NCAA Division I-FCS playoff berth with two Big South Conference games remaining. The Aggies are tied atop the conference with the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs at 3-0. They will host Charleston Southern next week at Truist in their regular-season home finale. A&T will close out the regular season at GWU.

Whatever pitfalls confront the Aggies over those final two weeks, one thing is for sure; they have shown the capacity to recover and triumph.

Guilford College Quakers Snap ODAC Losing Streak

The Guilford College football team made the short trip across the Virginia/North Carolina state line to face Averett University. Defense and special teams prove vital as Guilford was victorious, 26-0.

The win snaps an 18-conference game losing streak as well as the first shutout since October 1, 2016 when GC defeated Catholic, 59-0.

In the game, the defense forced five Averett turnovers including four interceptions with two by Trsitian Bailey. As a team, the Quakers held the Cougars to 247 totals yards (192 passing and 55 rushing).

On the first drive, the Guilford offense struggled to move the ball and punted the ball to Averett. The Cougars began to move the ball down the field and seemed to have a couple of scoring opportunities but penalties brought the plays back.

Facing a 4th-and-9, Averett attempted a 36-yard field goal but Montrel Cooper crept up to the line and blocked the kick. Adam Lacy picked up the loose ball and returned it to the GC 17 to set up the offense.

A loss on first down followed by a false start forced the Quakers to punt the ball back to the Cougars. Averett started on its own 48 but were unable to pick up a first down. On the punt, Weston Setzer came up the middle and blocked the kick as Guilford recovered at the Cougar 20.

Despite not being able to move the chains, Cameron Haiduven was able to provide a spark for GC. The junior kicker made a 34-yard field goal for the 3-0 lead with 4:39 remaining in the first.

From then, both defensive squads stood tall. The Quakers threatened early in the second as Bailey Baker found Brodey King at the one-yard line but the ball was stripped from the tight end as Averett was able to recover the loose ball.

Guilford’s defense continued its excellent play in the first half and forced another punt. Starting at the GC 20 with 5:38 left in the first half, Baker and the offense went to work. The quarterback connected on with Tre Alexander on back-to-back completions to the Averett 42.

Baker and Thomas Laws made connections on the next two passes to cover 19 yards for another first down. After a incompletion, Baker found Alexander for a pick third down pickup to set up first and goal at the eight. On the very next play, Baker completed the pass to Eric Mays in the endzone for the score. After a successful point after, Guilford led 10-0 with 2:55 to go.

The next drive for the Cougars started to move the ball but DJ McRae intercepted the ball and returned it to the AU 40. The Quakers moved the ball and were poised to strike and they seemed to score on a pass from Baker to Alexander but a pass interference moved the ball back.

Eventually, Haiduven was called upon to kick a 33-yard field goal and was successful. At the half, Guilford led 13-0 over the Cougars.

In the second half, the defensive stronghold continued. Averett took the opening kick and drove down field to the Quaker 25 but the GC defense held the hosts to a field goal attempt. The 41-yard field goal attempt missed to the left as the score remained 13-0.

Guilford’s offense took the field for the first time in the second half and picked up where it left off in the first. Baker led a six-play drive covering 75 yards capped off by a 14-yard touchdown pass to Eric Mays. The extra point was no good as GC led 19-0 with 9:48 to go in the third.

Both teams exchanged turnovers and punts until the 3:35 mark when Bailey intercepted a pass and returned it 24 yards for the pick-six. Haiduven’s extra point was good as GC led 26-0.

The defense preserved the shutout over the final 18:35 of game action as the Quakers won by the 26-point margin. The win is the first in the conference since October of 2019 and the first road conference win since October 2017.

Offensively, Baker threw for 289 yards on 21 completions with two touchdowns and an interception. Alexander led the receiving core with 98 yards on five receptions while Mays caught seven passes for 63 yards and two scores.

Guilford returns home for the final game of the season as it will face Bridgewater College on Saturday, November 12 for Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.

Greensboro College Pride Drops Final Road Contest Of The Season To Methodist

Fayetteville, NC – On Saturday night, the Greensboro College Football team hit the road for the final time this season, as they traveled south to face Methodist University at Monarch Stadium. There was a lot of emotion in the air as Methodist honored their Seniors prior to kick-off. Coach Card and his team were looking to close out their last two games of the season on a winning note and it began tonight in Fayetteville.

In the first quarter, the Pride were beneficiaries of two Monarch pass interference calls, allowing the offense to move into the red zone at the 3:09 mark. However, a false start on Greensboro, negated some of that yardage. The Pride would eventually get on the board when Junior Marano Collins (Loganville, GA) converted a 30 yard FG, his longest of the season, to take the 3-0 lead and that is how the quarter would end.

Methodist wasted no time as the second quarter began, marching the ball down the field for a touchdown and they followed that up on the next series with a pick six, to suddenly go up by a score of 14-3. On Greensboro’s next offensive possession, Redshirt Senior Quarterback, David Loughry II (Indian Land, SC) orchestrated an 11 play, 80 yard drive that concluded with him connecting with fellow Redshirt Senior Cale Matthews (Four Oks, NC) for an 8 yard touchdown pass, to pull the Pride to within four points, 14-10. Unfortunately, the Monarchs had an answer and marched down the field to increase their lead back to 11 points, 21-10, as the half came to a close.

Methodist came out of the locker room and found the end zone on a 65 yard run play, to strike first in the third quarter, taking a 27-10 advantage. Greensboro was able to move the ball to midfield but they would turn the ball over, ending the drive. On the next series, the defense forced a punt and the Pride offense quickly took advantage as Loughry found Redshirt Senior Zach Atkinson (Durham, NC) for an 80 yard touchdown pass, trimming the lead to 27-17. Sophomore Max Steele (Julian, NC) scooped up a Monarchs fumble and suddenly the Pride were back on offense. Unfortunately, their drive would stall and Greensboro had to punt. Methodist took advantage and added another touchdown to close out the quarter leading 34-17.

The fourth quarter began with the Monarchs finding the end zone again to increase their lead to 41-17. However, Junior Back-Up Quarterback, Alec Williams-Carr (Miami, FL) came in the game and put together a 14 play, 77 yard drive, resulting in an 8 yard touchdown pass to Junior Ryan Buchanan (Havelock, NC) in the corner of the end zone. Methodist answered again with a touchdown run and that is how the game would end ,with the Pride falling by a final score of 48-23.

For Greensboro, Loughry and Williams combined for 25 completions on 52 attempts, throwing for 388 yards with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, while Matthews hauled in a total of 4 catches for 70 yards and a touchdown. Steele led the defense with 12 total tackles and Freshman Andrew Burgess (Fort Washington, MD) had three punt returns, with a long of 24 yards. The Pride will return home for their final game of the season as they host North Carolina Wesleyan next Saturday, November 12th, at Pride Field. Kick-off is scheduled for Noon and the program’s Seniors will be honored prior to the game.
