UNCG Women’s Basketball Hosts Furman in Conference Home Opener

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s basketball team continues Southern Conference (SoCon) play hosting the Furman Paladins on Thursday with a start time of 7 p.m. for its league home opener at Fleming Gym.

The Spartans fell to the Samford Bulldogs, 66-76.
Akira Wiggins had a season high with 23 points to lead the game.
Wiggins, Khalis Cain, and Isys Grady all had eight rebounds to lead the team.
UNCG had 17 second-chance points compared to four that Samford had.
Faith Price(Ragsdale High School), Grady, and Nitzan Amar all had one block for the Spartans.
Both UNCG and Samford had 16 points off turnovers.

UNCG is first in the conference in blocks per game (3.1) and turnovers forced per game (18.31).
The Spartans are second in the conference assist/turnover ratio (0.86), assists per game (13.6), scoring offense (68.9), steals per game (8.4), three-point attempts per game (22.2), three pointers per game (6.2) and turnover margin (2.44).
Cain is ranked first in the conference in total blocks (24), blocks per game (1.50), rebounds (151), offensive rebounds per game (4.8) and total rebounds per game (9.4).
Cain is fourth nationally in offensive rebounds per game (4.8) and 24th in total rebounds (151).
Wiggins is ranked second in the conference in assists (68) and assists per game (4.2).
Price is ranked seventh nationally in three-point attempts (129), 17th in three pointers (45), and 29th in three pointers per game (2.81).

Furman is ranked first in the conference in free throw attempts per game (19.88), offensive rebounds per game (17.8), rebounds per game (43.38), and three-point percentage defense (27.0).
The Paladins are second in rebound margin (7.6) among the conference.
Furman is nationally fourth ranked in offensive rebounds per game (17.8).
Janay Outten is nationally ranked ninth in assist/turnover ratio (2.76).
Outten is ranked first in the conference in total assists (69), assists per game (4.3) and assist/turnover ratio (2.76).
Grace Van Rij is first in field goal percentage (54.0) in the conference.
Jaelyn Acker is ranked second in the conference in three-point attempts (117), three pointer per game (2.38) and three pointers (38).
Jada Session is second in rebounds per game (8.0), and rebounds (128) in the conference.
The Paladins are outscoring opponents 67.2-64.4 and outrebounding opponents, 694-572.

The Spartans continue their conference slate at home on Saturday, January 14 with a 4 pm matchup against Wofford for a Girl Scout Night.
They then hit the road for a contest against Western Carolina at 7 pm in Cullowhee, N.C.

UNCG has won the last seven out of 12 games, dating back to the 2016-17 season.
UNCG leads the series, 28-27.
Furman won both games last year with scores of 54-44 and 64-52.
