Mendenhall boys 55, Western Guilford 52
They were down by nine points at the end of the First Quarter, down by nine points at halftime, and still down by nine points at the end of the Third Quarter, and they still came back and won the game…Mendenhall Middle School Mustangs 55, Western Guilford Middle School 52 was the final…Mustangs’ coach Richard Sherman told me before the game that he was missing some players due to the flu, and I told him, “You Still Have Poindexter”, and Asai Poindexter hit for 25 points for Mendenhall and they won the Game of the Week, the Game of the Month, and the Game of the Year, on the Middle School Basketball Level in North Carolina….Poindexter and McKnight led the way for Mendenhall, while Seth Harris and McCullen were tops for the WG Tigers…This was one of those “Game of the Year” moments, tonight at the Western Guilford Middle School Gym…Both teams were outstanding, but in the end, the Mendenhall Mustangs took it home…

In this game, Western Guilford roared out to the early lead, but Seth Harris got into some early-game foul trouble, as he was hit with two fouls in the first period(Harris had four fouls at the end of the third period)…Harris is one of the biggest forces in the post, in Guilford County Middle School basketball..When Harris sat down, McCullen, Hernandez, and Lowe helped WG stay out in front, but Mendenhall stayed within striking distance the entire game, with Poindexter(25 points) and McKnight(19 points) keeping the Mustangs in the ballgame…Harris and McCullen both hit for 19 points each to lead Western….McKnight hit three huge 3’s for Mendenhall…Plus Poindexter proved to be potent at the free throw line, connecting on five(5) key foul shots in the contest…Harris also nailed five(5) big free throws for Western, but he missed a few, he would love to have back…Western lost a key player to an ankle injury late in the contest, as McCullen went out limping, with about 2:30 left in the contest, and never was able to return for the WG Tigers…

Down the stretch, this was THE ballgame, the kind of the game they/we call “the Game of the Week, the Game of the Month, and the Game of the Year” all rolled into one, on the Middle School Basketball Level, here in North Carolina…These kids just coming up with huge shots down the stretch in this contest, and we had lead changes, the score was tied, and the kids just continued to come up BIG on both ends of the court…You won’t see a better ballgame than this one, this season in North Carolina…I will put this one up there with the Northern Guilford Varsity boys Overtime Win over Northwest Guilford, at NWG, a few weeks back…

WG AD Steve Sexton kept the House in Order today at Western Guilford Middle School, and you could have not ordered up a better basketball game than this one…Coach/General Sherman and his Mustang troops deserve a lot of credit for coming back and taking this victory, and our Player of the Game, is Asai Poindexter from Mendenhall Middle School…
(I think we need to go out and catch our breath, after this Boys Middle School Game Today.)

Mendenhall Scoring:Herring 4 points, K. Johnson 4 points, Horton 3, Austin 2, McCullough 2
Mitchell moves the ball well for WG, and Hunter was having a primetime shooting day today, for the Tigers…Hunter told us she has only been playing basketball for around one year…Free throw shooting for the girls is becoming a new fashion…The rub their socks, then adjust their socks, flip their arm toward the basket, like a follow-through, and then they let the shot rip…Hunter hit five big free throws in the game for Western Guilford, and Mitchell put in three FT’s…Hunter does a step back, she dribbles maybe two-to-three times, repeats that same routine again, and then releases the basketball for the Free Throw…

  1. Thank-you Mr. Cox…Cooper is one of the top young girls basketball players in our area…I have been following her playing and shooting basketball since she was in the 4th or 5th grade…And people need to remember, Cooper is only in the 7th grade…She can really go/play/shoot..
