Pride split doubleheader with Bridgewater to open the season
Bridgewater, VA – It had been a long wait, but the season opener was finally here for the Greensboro College Softball team as they traveled north to Virginia to face ODAC member Bridgewater College. The two teams would play a doubleheader on a sunny Friday afternoon and the Pride and Eagles would each come away with a win.
Greensboro jumped on the board first when Senior Hannah French (Reidsville, NC) doubled to drive in two runs in the top of the first inning. However, in the bottom of the fourth-inning Bridgewater was able to even things up at 2-2 and in the next inning the Eagles followed that up with a bases loaded HR, to take their first lead of the game at 6-2. Unfortunately, the Pride were unable to get across home plate and would fall in Game 1 by a final score of 7-2.
Greensboro was led by French who finished with a double and 2 RBI’s and Junior Ivy Ray (Thomasville, NC), who also added a hit for the Pride.
Bridgewater quickly grabbed a four run lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Greensboro began to chip away at the advantage when Sophomore M’Kenzie Davis (Greensboro, NC) homered in the top of the third inning. The Pride would pick up another in the next inning when Junior Alexis Sox (Burlington, NC) smacked a double into left field to score Senior Kassie Simmons (Gibsonville, NC). After a French RBI double in the sixth inning, Greensboro took their first lead of the game when Senior Brooke Kinley (Lexington, NC) hit a two RBI single. Simmons would give the Pride an insurance run when she hit an RBI double and that was enough, as Greensboro picked up their first win of the season, 6-4.
Junior Lauren Engel (Huntersville, NC) went the distance striking out six batters to pick up the win. Offensively, Simmons finished the game going 3-3, with a double, an RBI and 2 runs, while Kinley led the team with two RBI’s.
The Pride will return to action Wednesday, March 1st win they travel back to Virginia to face another ODAC opponent, Randolph College. The two teams will play a doubleheader and first pitch is scheduled for 2:00pm.
