UNCG Women’s Basketball Takes Down SoCon Leading ETSU

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three from the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s basketball team contributed double figures in a win over Southern Conference (SoCon) leading ETSU on Thursday, February 23 in Fleming Gym.

This was the Spartan’s fourth-straight win. This is the longest win streak since the 2019-20 season.

Akira Wiggins had 20 points for a game-high, while Faith Price added 11 points. Isys Grady had a double-double contributing 10 points and 12 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams went scoreless for the first one minute and 30 seconds to start the frame, as Akira Wiggins made a layup in the paint at 8:30, 2-0. Neither team found the momemtum, as the Spartans shot 30.77-percent from field goals, while the Bucs shot 26.67-percent. ETSU scored five points to end the frame for a three-point advantage, 12-9.

Faith Price had a jump shot in the first 30 seconds of the second quarter, cutting the deficit to one, 11-12. An 8-3 run in favor of ETSU put the Bucs up six, 20-14, with 4:56 left in the frame. Nitzan Amar had a three-point buzzer-beater to end a seven-point scoring run and head into the locker room, with a one-point advantage, 21-20.

A very back-and-forth quarter in the third resulted in three lead changes and two tied scores, including a 10-point scoring run from the Spartans. ETSU was able to counter that with a nine-point scoring run to end the frame with a two-point advantage, 40-28.

UNCG went on a 14-4 run to begin the fourth quarter, for an eight-point advantage, 52-44. The Spartans defended the Bucs hard in the frame only allowing them to score seven points, ending the game with a nine-point buffer, 58-49.

BY THE NUMBERS
UNCG saw 16 points off the bench compared to ETSU’s three.
Khalis Cain added nine rebounds for the team.
Wiggins had a team-high of two steals.
This was Grady’s fourth double-double of the season, ninth of her career.

UNCG finishes regular season play against Chattanooga on Saturday, February 25th, with a tip of 4 p.m. February 25 will be the Spartans’ senior night.

The Spartans await its fate in the 2023 SoCon Tournament. The Tournament will take place in Asheville, N.C. from March 2nd to March 5 at Harrah’s Cherokee Center.
