Pride bounce back after Game 1 10th inning loss to take Game 2 over Averett, 10-3

High Point, NC – On Sunday afternoon the Greensboro College Baseball team played their first of many home games this season at Truist Point Stadium, as they hosted Averett University for a two 9-inning doubleheader. This was the second time the two teams had met in five days, with the Pride coming away with the win in Virginia on Tuesday. On this day, both teams would battle it out to come away with a split, with the Cougars winning Game 1 in 10 innings, 6-3 and Greensboro winning Game 2, 10-3.

Game 1
In the first inning, Sophomore, Samuel Hayen (Fort Lauderdale, FL) hit an RBI single, driving home last week’s USA South Rookie of the Weeek Freshman Brody Gardner (Asheboro, NC), to take an early lead, 1-0. However, Averett would tie the game in the top of the second inning and the score staed tied for the next six innings. In their half of the eighth inning, the Cougars grabbed a two run advantage, forcing the Pride to a do or die situation in the bottom of the ninth. Greensboro would take advantage of some solid at bats, as Freshamn Evan Sykes (Graham, NC) was able to cross the plate, which was followed by a sacrifice fly from Freshman Louis Berini (Bahama, NC) to bring home Freshman Alden Kolessar (Summerfield, NC), which sent the game into extra innings. Unfornately, Averett took control of the 10th inning, handing the Pride the defeat, 6-3.

Gardner led Greensboro going 2-4, while Hayen and Berini each added an RBI.

Game 2
The Pride bats came alive in the second and third innings, when Sophomore Myles Vacharasin (Land O’Lakes, FL) drove in Berini and then with two on, Sophomore Moses Lopez (Fort Lauderdale, FL) hit a towering three-run homerun to give Greensboro an early lead, 4-0. After the Cougars answered with a run of their own, Berini scored Sykes with a sacrifice fly to centerfield and then Freshamn Hudsoon Powell (Greensboro, NC) came to the plate and drilled an RBI single into left field. The scoring would continue in the seventh inning with Sykes stealing home, and that was followed by a an RBI single from Kolessar. Finally in the eight inning, the Pride loaded the bases and forced two walks to bring in their 9th and 10th runs of the game, and hat is all they would need to secure the win over Averett, 10-3.

Berini finished the game going 3-3 with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs, while Lopez was 2-4 with 3 RBI’s and 2 runs. In addition, Senior Sam Peddycord (Kernersville, NC) earned the win on the mound, pitching five innings with 4 strikeouts, while only giving up 1 run.

Greensboro will travel across town on Wednesday, March 1st as they face Guilford College . First pitch is scheduled for 2:00pm.
