Greensboro falls in Charlotte to Sewanee

Charlotte, NC -On Thursday, the Greensboro College Men’s Lacrosse team traveled south down I-85 to Charlotte for a neutral site game with Sewanee (University of the South). Even though it was a neutral site game, it was a Tigers’ home game so the Pride were in their road uniforms. Both teams would come out strong on both ends of the field, but despite going 3-5 on Man-Up opportunities, to go along with a Man-Down goal and 23 saves from Senior Edward Rowley (Brockport, NY), Greensboro would fall to Sewanee by a final score of 19-11.

Three minutes into the first quarter, the Tigers took the lead, 1-0 but goals by Graduate Student Seth Mandryk (Stonewall Manitoba, CA) and Senior Austin Abourjilie (Greensboro, NC) allowed the Pride to claim the lead at 2-1. However, Sewanee closed out the first 15 minutes with a goal and then opened the second quarter with three straight goals. Two minutes later, Sophomore Jack Martinez (Maitland, FL) fired one past the Tiger goalie and then Junior William Beyer (Greensboro. NC) took advantage of a Man-Down defensive stop to take the ball and score at the other end. Once again, though, Sewanee rattled of four straight goals towards the end of the quarter, but Abourjilie ended the half with a score, trimming the lead to 9-5.

The Tigers found the net again to begin the third quarter, but as he had done most of the first half, Abourjilie got Greensboro back on the board as he scored four goals in the quarter, keeping the Pride within striking distance. Unfortunately, the fourth quarter would only see a goal by Junior Aaron Larios-Neubert (Beaverton, OR) on a Man-Up opportunity and as the final horn sounded, Greensboro fell 19-11.

The Pride will return to the action on Saturday, March 25th as they travel to Fayetteville, NC for their USA South Conference opener against Methodist University. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00pm.

GAME NOTE: While this was a home game for the Tigers, they did not have anyone on site to do Live Video and Live Stats. The Greensboro College Athletic Department’s Sports Information Office had made the trip to Charlotte and was able to make sure live stats were available for our fans and also tried to create a live stream from Charlotte Country Day School’s field. Unfortunately, there was no Wifi or Ethernet cords to plug into for the broadcast and the portable MiFi’s we had were not receiving a consistent signal in the area. We apologize to all Pride fans and family that the stream was unable to be broadcast.
