UNCG Softball Wins Fourth-Straight with 5-3 Victory Over Gardner-Webb

GREENSBORO, N.C.– The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team won its fourth-straight game behind a 5-3 victory over Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium.

With the win, the Spartans swept their Spartan Classic beating Gardner-Webb twice and Army West Point twice.

The Spartans improve to 18-12 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Runnin’ Bulldogs threatened early in the top of the first loading the bases with one out. Rhyann Jones struck out her first batter for the second out and then Ligotti lined out to get out of the jam.

The Spartans loaded the bases themselves in the bottom of the frame and Jessie Shipley drove a long fly ball out to right field for a sacrifice fly, scoring Delaney Cumbie from third for a 1-0 advantage.

Jones retired six-straight batters between the first and third innings and UNCG capitalized on a Shipley solo home run to right field for a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. This was the sophomore’s sixth homer of the season and 13th of her career.

Gardner-Webb responded with back-to-back home runs from Christopher and Lyon in the top of the fifth to tie the game at two.

With a 3-1 count in the bottom of the sixth, Blayke Batten crushed her third homer of the season and 14th of her career to take the lead back, 5-2. Batten drove home Shipley and Rylie Williams on the blast.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs had runners on second and third with one out in the top of the seventh, as Garcia singled down the third base line to cut the deficit to two, 5-3. In the circle, Jorde Chartrand got the final out on a ground out after loading the bases with a walk.
