Jonas Hits Grand Slam in 13-9 Loss to VMI

LEXINGTON, V.A. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team dropped the second game against VMI on Saturday afternoon with a score of 13-9.

Dosi Jonas hit UNCG’s first grand slam of the season in the top of the ninth. He was one of six Spartans that had hits in the game, swinging 4-for-4 at the plate with five RBI, three runs scored, and two doubles.

Zack Budzik hit his second home run in the top of the eighth. His homer was one of his two hits in the game, swinging 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

How it Happened

Jonas hit his fourth home run of the season in the top of the second for the first run of the game giving UNCG a 1-0 lead.

VMI scored eight runs between the fourth and the seventh innings, for an 8-1 advantage.

The Spartans made a last-minute run, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth, from Budzik’s solo home run, Jonas’ double that scored GC Jarman, and Luke Jenkins’ sacrifice fly that scored Jonas to cut the deficit to four, 8-4.

The Keydets’ five-inning eighth extended the lead to 13-4, before the Spartans continued its offensive attack in the top of the ninth. With Budzik and Matt Kemp on base, Jarman continued the last-minute run, with a RBI single to center field bringing his teammate to home. Rowan Watt was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and Jonas crushed a pitch over the left field wall and VMI retired the side with a double play to hold on for the win, 13-9.

The Spartans finish play in Lexington, VA on Sunday, April 2nd at 1 p.m. Following the game against VMI, UNCG heads to High Point for a mid-week match-up on Tuesday, April 4th.
