UNCG Baseball Uses Six-Run Ninth to Defeat VMI, 14-8

LEXINGTON, V.A. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team rallied in the ninth inning for a 14-8 win against VMI on Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference (SoCon) play to conclude the three-game series.

Dosi Jonas hit a solo home run in the top of the second to give UNCG a 1-0 lead. He later blasted his second-straight grand slam in the bottom of the ninth giving the Spartans a five-run advantage, 14-8. Jonas went 3-for-6 at the plate today, as one of four Spartans to have hits in the game.

Bradley Bott hit a two-run home run in the top of the fourth and it was the first homer of the season for the junior. He drove in Rowan Watt to even the score at five apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Keydets countered the Spartan’s home run from Jonas, by scoring five runs in the bottom of the second on three hits and two errors, for a four-run lead, 5-1.

With bases loaded in the top of the third, Mitchell Smith was hit by a pitch to score Zack Budzik, 5-2. Luke Jenkins continued the scoring by reaching on a fielder’s choice to the second baseman allowing GC Jarman to score, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

Following Bott’s homer in the fourth, he was walked with the bases loaded in the fifth, giving UNCG its first lead since the second inning, 6-5.

With no time to spare, the Keydets tied the game at six with a solo home run from Brett Cook in the bottom of the fifth.

VMI held UNCG scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings and the Keydets took the advantage with a run in each of those innings for a 8-6 lead.

In a last-minute rally, UNCG tied the game at eight in the top of the eighth on Jonas’ two-out two-run single. The Spartans continued its attack in the top of the ninth, scoring six runs on just one hit and four walks, which included Jonas’ grand slam. Matt Kemp, who came in relief, tossed 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit, walking three with one strikeout to earn his fourth win of the season.

ON DECK

The Spartans visit High Point on Tuesday, April 4th with a first pitch at 6 p.m. for a mid-week game.

UNCG then heads to Birmingham, Alabama for a three-game series to play against SoCon foe Samford, starting on Thursday, April 6th.
