Congratulations to John Hughes, the new Athletic Director at Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point

HIGH POINT – Wesleyan Christian has hired John Hughes as its new athletic director, the school announced Monday afternoon.

Hughes was the longtime coach and athletic director at Northwest Guilford before becoming assistant principal at Eastern Guilford and then at Northwest, where he has been since 2020. He replaces Joe Woodward, who was hired in June 2021.

John Hughes stepson, Dean Reiber, is an outstanding basketball player in his own right, and he is on the roster at Rutgers University…Dean is 6’10/225, and is a forward for the Scarlet Knights…Dean also got a shorter haircut when he arrived at Rutgers…He had some long thick locks, back in his days on the boy’s basketball team, at Northwest Guilford High School..

Dean learned quite a bit of his basketball game from John Hughes…John pulled off a real feat while he was the AD at Northwest Guilford HS…John actually served as the fill-in junior varsity boys basketball coach, and it was and still is during a time, when the AD at a school can not coach any team, but John had to step up and carry the load, when one of his coaches went down, and that is just the way it is, as Sir Walter Cronkite used to say…

John Hughes was a basketball referee, and he umpired baseball and softball…John played college baseball for the Duke Blue Devils, and one Summer baseball season, he coached the Asheboro Copperheads…John Hughes moved south, from the northeastern portion of the United States, and when John came south to play college baseball at Duke, he never went back…He loved the south and he took a job coaching and teaching at Northwest Guilford High School…

John used to always send me the news when his Northwest Guilford HS student-athletes were having their college signing days…I was there for many of those events, and John Hughes was the facilitator…

John Hughes now on his way into Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, as the WES Trojans new AD/Athletic Director…

Coach John Hughes is a very good hire for Wesleyan, and they have had some good ones over there at WES, over the years…

You can back to boy’s basketball coach Brad Ehrmann, boy’s soccer coach David Sanford, boy’s basketball coach Keith Gatlin, baseball coach Scott Davis, and you can go on…Former WES AD Glen Foster, who was in elementary school back when I was teaching and coaching at Vandalia Christian School…

You had wrestling coach David Lancaster, who was also at Vandalia, along with his brothers Tommy and Brady…There was former soccer assistant coach Chris Glover, who I used to teach and coach in soccer at the YMCA Summer Camps, you had Everett Hancock who coached some baseball and basketball at WES, and Everett was a big-time baseball player, over at Ragsdale HS, back in his day…

You had three of the top soccer players to come out of Wesleyan, in Robert Tucker, Robbie Hicks, and Aaron Tooley…I coached Robert, Robbie, and Aaron back in their junior high days at Vandalia…There was also Dennis Hanlin, who came over to WES, from the soccer teams at VCS…You had Theo Pinson, Harry Giles, and Aaron Wiggins, who all played basketball for WES, and then went on to play in the NBA….And lest we forget and miss this play at the plate completely, Wesleyan Christian Academy produced Major League Baseball player Wil Myers, who has had several successful years, at the MLB level…

Lots of good sports history from over at Wesleyan Christian Academy from over the years…And now John Hughes will start a new chapter in the WES Athletics history book…

Best of Luck to John Hughes, as he hits High Point, and as he settles in at Wesleyan Christian Academy…John will finish up his duties as the assistant principal to Principal Ashley Young at Northwest Guilford HS, and then John Hughes will become a Trojan for life….
