Furman Takes Two Games from UNCG Softball

GREENVILLE, S.C.– The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team was unable to get past Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Furman on Thursday in a doubleheader.

UNCG is now 23-15 overall and 3-2 in the SoCon.

Furman is 14-22 overall and 6-2 in the SoCon.

GAME 1: Furman 5 – UNCG 4 (9 innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Furman kicked off the scoring with a solo home run from Alex Rose Molinar in the bottom of the second for a 1-0 lead. The Spartans’ Brooklynn Maxwell sent an 0-2 count over the left center fence for a 2-1 advantage, scoring Delaney Cumbie from first in the top of the third.

The Paladins quickly took the lead back in the bottom of the frame with Ludlam’s two-run home run to left center, 3-2.

After three scoreless innings, UNCG tied the game at three with an RBI single from Samantha Lagrama in the top of the seventh. Lagrama’s single down the right field line scored Cumbie from second.

Neither team put up a run in the eighth, but Maxwell doubled through the right side in the top of the ninth driving home Cumbie to take the lead, 4-3.

With runners on first and second in the bottom of the frame and no outs, the Paladins’ Ashlee Lykins singled through the left side scoring Molinar to tie the game at four. Following a single and back-to-back fielder’s choices, Furman walked off as Lykins crossed home for a 5-4 win.

NOTES:

Cumbie went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a double.
Maxwell and Lagrama were the only other Spartans with multi-hit games.
Maxwell went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored, while Lagrama also went 2-for-4 with one RBI
Jorde Chartrand came in relief for Maddie Spell.
Chartrand tossed 5.1 innings and ultimately lost, 5-4.

GAME 2: Furman 8 – UNCG 7
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first three innings was a pitcher’s duel, as UNCG had four hits to Furman’s two.

UNCG tallied the first run of the game in the top of the fourth, as White reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on the error. Loftin followed with a double to left center extending its lead to 2-0.

The Paladins strung together six hits to score five runs, putting Furman, up 5-2. Furman’s Perry homered to left center for a 6-2 lead and then Molinar’s RBI single extended the lead to five, 7-2.

UNCG fought back with six runs on three hits, one error, and three walks to tie the game at seven. Anna White doubled down the right field line with one out, scoring Blayke Batten for a 7-3 deficit. Jaden Cheek’s RBI single to left field scored another run for a 7-4 score. With one hit-by-pitch and three-straight walks, UNCG tied the scored at seven. After batting around, Batten caught a fly ball to left field scoring Maxwell for the Spartans’ eighth run of the game.

Perry once again homered in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at eight and following two strikeouts and a walk, Fleming tripled to right center scoring Molinar for the game-winning run, 9-8.

NOTES:

Four Spartans had multi-hit games, including Maxwell, Lagrama, Anna White, and Grace Loftin.
All four went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Loftin drove in two RBI.
White went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, one RBI, and a double.
Salem Ward tossed 2.2 innings in relief, striking out four batters in the loss.

The Spartans are scheduled to complete the three-game series tomorrow, Friday, April 7 in Greenville, S.C. at Pepsi Stadium with a start time at 2:00 p.m.
