Baseball Defeats Samford, 4-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.– The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team defeated Samford in a 4-2 battle on Friday afternoon at J.L. Griffin Field scoring all four runs off home runs.

Jake Wolf pitched four innings, allowed no runs, and had three strikeouts to earn his second win of the season. Matt Kemp tossed one inning allowing no hits and no runs for his first save of the season.

How it Happened

Kennedy Jones started the Spartans scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first, going 2-for-5 at the plate, as the only one from UNCG with a multi-hit game. This was his sixth homer of the season and the 17th of his career.

Samford countered in the bottom of the frame scoring one run off a sacrifice fly out to the left field to even the score at one.

UNCG had another home run in the top of the second by Daniel Cerda for his second home run of the season to take the lead again, 2-1.

The Bulldogs’ Stephen Klein hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third to even the score again at two.

The home runs continued at the top of the fourth when Caleb Cozart and Rowan Watt hit home runs to take the advantage, 4-2. Cozart hit his fifth home run of the season, while Watt hit his fourth home run of the season.

Both teams were scoreless between the fifth and the ninth innings as UNCG came out on top, 4-2.
