UNCG Softball Splits Twin Bill With Radford

RADFORD, Va.– The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team split a mid-week non-conference twin bill with Radford, winning 8-2 in game one and falling 5-4 in game two.

UNCG is now 24-16 overall, while Radford is 12-23.

GAME 1: UNCG 8 – Radford 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams were scoreless in the first inning, where Radford went down on three-straight strikeouts from Maddie Spell in the circle in the bottom of the frame.

UNCG’s bats came alive in the top of the second with three home runs for six total runs. Blayke Batten homered to left field over the treetops as the leadoff batter for a 1-0 advantage. Maycin Brown singled down the left field line and Jorde Chartrand blasted one over the center field fence extending the lead to 3-0. With one out and runners on first and second Brooklynn Maxwell sailed a 1-1 count over the left center fence for a 6-0 lead.

Radford cut the deficit to five, 6-1, in the bottom of the frame, as Thompson hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Wilson from third.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Qween Edmonds singled to first base scoring Abby Wilson from third cutting the deficit once again, 6-2.

Chartrand extended UNCG’s lead back to six, 8-2, smashing the first pitch of her at bat over the left field fence in the top of the seventh for her second two-run home run of the game.

Spell concluded the game with her career-best 11th strikeout earning her seventh win of the season in the circle.

NOTES:

Chartrand was the lone Spartan with a multi-hit game, swinging 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI.
This was her first multi-home run game of the season, bringing her season total to five.
Maxwell hit her third homer of the season.
Batten crushed her sixth home run of the season.

GAME 2: Radford 5 – UNCG – 4
HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG put a run on the board in the top of the first inning, as a two-out RBI single from Chartrand scored Batten from first.

The Spartans added a run to its lead after Loftin doubled to right center and Jaden Cheek drove her in on a single to right field in the top of the fourth.

The Highlanders cut the deficit to 2-1 behind a fifth-inning rally. With two outs and runners on the corners, Wilson singled to center field bringing in Laura Thompson from third.

UNCG added a run to its tally in the sixth and seventh innings for a 4-1 lead. In the top of the sixth, Anna White singled to center field in the leadoff spot and Jessie Shipley drove in Tori Dalehite from first, who pinch ran for White. The following inning saw Loftin connect at the plate with two outs giving Maycin Brown time to score.

Radford once again rallied in the bottom of the seventh scoring four runs on three hits and one error, including a walk-off two-run home run from Rachel Smith, 5-4.

NOTES:

Batten went 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored.
Chartrand was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Loftin went 3-for-4 with one run scored, one RBI, and a double.

ON DECK

The Spartans return to Greensboro, N.C. this weekend for a three-game series hosting Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Samford. The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday with a first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
