GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team returns to Southern Conference (SoCon) action this weekend as it hosts the Samford Bulldogs this Saturday and Sunday.

The Spartans enter the contest 24-16 overall with a 3-2 SoCon record. Samford is currently 17-23 overall and is 6-3 in the conference.

LAST TIME OUT

· UNCG split a doubleheader against non-conference opponent Radford, winning the first game 8-2 and then falling 5-4 in Virginia.

· Maddie Spell won her seventh game in the circle for the Spartans during game one throwing her seventh complete game this season.

· Spell struck out a career-best 11 batters.

· Jorde Chartrand crushed two home runs, while Blayke Batten and Brooklynn Maxwell hit one homer each in the game.

· In game two, Grace Loftin (2-for-4), Chartrand (2-for-4), and Batten (2-for-3) each had multi-hit games.

Chartrand leads the Spartans with a .375 batting average.
Chartrand leads UNCG with 66 total strikeouts in the circle after pitching 73.2 innings thus far.
Brooklynn Maxwell is second with a .328 batting average and leading the team with 11 doubles.
Jessie Shipley paces the Spartans with 28 RBI.
Maycin Brown leads UNCG with nine home runs.
Rhyann Jones is 7-1 in the circle, while Spell also has seven wins (7-5). Spell has tossed a team-best 85.1 innings and leads with a 2.95 ERA.
Nationally, the Spartans are: first in walks (179), sixth in double plays per game (0.52), tied for 12th in home runs (50), 17th in home runs per game (1.25), 43rd in slugging percentage (0.468), 47th in scoring (5.50), 51st in doubles (52), 54th in on base percentage (0.380).
UNCG is leading the conference in 10 categories including: double plays per game, doubles, doubles per game, home runs per game, on base percentage, scoring, shutouts, slugging percentage, win-loss percentage, and walks.
Among the nation, Brown is 72nd in home runs (9).
Delaney Cumbie is eighth nationally in walks per game (0.88), while Samantha Lagrama joins her in the top 30 and is 28th in in walks per game (0.74).
Cumbie is 56th in runs per game (0.92) and 74th in on-base percentage (0.484).
Cumbie was named SoCon Player of the Week twice so far this season, while Spell has been voted SoCon Pitcher of the Week twice, and Jones earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week once.

SCOUTING SAMFORD

The Bulldogs were picked as the SoCon preseason favorites.
McKenzie Newcomb was voted as the SoCon Preseason Pitcher of the Year and first team selection, while Jordyn Partain and Gwynnie Hornibrook were selected to the second team.
Samford is coming off back-to-back losses to ETSU, 7-3, and No. 14 Alabama, 6-2.
Samford is leading the SoCon in strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.76) and is 41st in the nation.
Nationally, Newcomb is seventh with 8.40 strikeout-to-walk ratio, ninth with 0.80 walks per nine innings, 23rd with 130.2 innings pitched, and 37th with 126 strikeouts. She is leading the SoCon in all of those categories.
She is 9-8 in the circle for the Bulldogs with seven complete games.
Nationally Logan Champion is fourth with 16 caught stealing by, 21st with 12 doubles, 47th with 82 total bases, and 67th with 0.30 doubles per game.
Grier Bruce has hit 10 home runs, which leads the team, is third in the SoCon and is 47th in the nation.
Three Bulldogs have hit .300 or higher, including Champion (.349), Sarah Squillace (.319), and Bruce (.307).
Bruce leads the team with 28 RBI, while Champion has totaled 21 RBI.
McKayla Cothran is nine for 11 in stolen base attempts.

HISTORY VS. SAMFORD

UNCG leads the series 25-21.

During regular season play, UNCG went 2-1 against Samford, claiming its fifth SoCon Regular Season title with a 4-2 eight-inning victory.

The Spartans then defeated the Bulldogs during the SoCon Tournament, 3-0.
