Southern Conference Announces Softball Players of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team saw sophomore Jorde Chartrand named Southern Conference (SoCon) softball Player of the Week, as announced by the conference Monday. Chartrand’s honor is the Spartans’ sixth of the season.

So far this season, Delaney Cumbie has been named SoCon Player of the Week twice, Spell has earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week twice, and Rhyann Jones was voted Pitcher of the Week two weeks ago.

Chartrand batted .438, had an on-base percentage of .500 and slugged .875 in five games last week as the Spartans went 3-2. On Wednesday in a doubleheader at Radford, Chartrand went 2-for-4 in each game as UNCG won game one, 8-2, before dropping game two 5-4.

The Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada, native’s two hits in game one were both two-run home runs, one coming in the second inning and the other was in the seventh, accounting for four RBIs. In game two, Chartrand had an RBI single in the first inning and another single in the fifth.

On Saturday, the sophomore went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI as UNCG won, 4-3, over Samford in eight innings in game one of the two teams’ doubleheader. Chartrand did not get a hit in game two but did reach base twice, once after being hit by a pitch in the sixth inning and the other on an error in the eighth inning in the Spartans’ 1-0 victory. In the series finale on Sunday, Chartrand went 2-for-3 with a double in a 4-2 setback for UNCG.

Chartrand also tossed 9.1 innings last week in the circle across three games, giving up just eight hits and four runs with one of them being earned. She struck out four batters, with two against Radford in game two and two against Samford on Saturday. Her ERA for the week was 0.75 and earned a 1-1 record in the circle.

Among the SoCon in pitching categories, Chartrand is second in saves (2) and games in relief (12), fifth in opposing batting average (.243) and games finished (9), sixth in batters struck out (68) and appearances (23), seventh in innings pitched (81.0), eighth in wins (6), and 10th in batters struck out looking (14) and runs allowed (44).

She is currently leading the team with a .375 batting average, .573 slugging percentage, and has a .423 on base percentage. She has hit five home runs, four doubles and is one of nine Spartans with double digit RBI. In the circle, she has a 3.37 ERA with a 6-6 overall record with two saves. Chartrand has tossed four complete games with 81.0 innings pitched giving up 76 hits and striking out 68 batters.
